Sacred Samhain (Oct 31 2007 00:59 GMT)

- by Molly Hall Nagy This time of the year is more than just an excuse to eat lots of those mini candy bars (which I love) -- it's a sacred time to honor the Beloved Dead, and draw on Scorpio's deep well. The veil not only drops between those of us in physical form and our spirit ancestors, but boundaries of time get blurred into one psychically rich "present." No wonder it's considered a powerful time to do divination, such as Tarot, and also to mine your dreams and spirit messages for guidance. This year Lunar Samhain falls on November 9th, when the new Moon is in Scorpio (Exact at 6:03 EST pm).

The Whole World In Their Hands" (Oct 31 2007 00:59 GMT)

- A long time ago there were people who worshiped the Gods. Some of these people lived in cities - others lived in the countryside. Some of the them could read and write - others were illiterate. Some of the them were rich and powerful, some of them were poor and some of them were slaves. But they all worshiped the Gods.

The Story of the Witch of Monroe (Oct 31 2007 00:59 GMT)

- by TONY SPINELLI Ed Coffey, the town historian of Monroe, has researched a lot of local legends and lore over the years, but one of his most intriguing subjects is Hannah Cranna, the so-called witch of Monroe. "I was probably in my late teens when I first heard of Hannah Cranna," said Coffey, now 68. He joined the local historical society as soon as it was formed, and benefited from guidance by mentor Merrill Beach, the town historian of neighboring Trumbull, who was his wife's godfather. Among the things that Coffey often questioned Beach about was the legend of Hannah Cranna. "It's said that she was a person who would put curses or hexes on people ?

My life as a Pagan priestess (Oct 31 2007 00:59 GMT)

- ALL her life, Janis Oulfkih had been searching for something. What it was, she couldn't exactly say - until she stumbled across a magazine article which struck a resounding chord? "It was called 'What's a Pagan?'," explains Janis. "I read it and thought 'That's exactly me;

Medieval Wiccans (Oct 31 2007 00:59 GMT)

- by Jennifer Emick Usually, I find long-winded "histories" of the ancient Wiccans of yore quite frustrating...but this one is so bad, I just had to give in and laugh myself silly. This has to be the ultimate warning to reporters to double-check anything an interviewee tells you. Among the things you never knew because they were never true: "The confusion actually begins by classifying Wicca as a religion, which it is not.

Why Pagans Aren?t Really Pagan (Oct 31 2007 00:59 GMT)

- Pagan is one of those wonderful words. We Christians can use it when we mean people who have ceased to believe in monotheism but have started believing in lots of other stuff (forces, etc.). I thought a lot about this over the summer after seeing a group of druid-wannabe?s at Stonehenge.

Samhain celebrates lives of the departed (Oct 31 2007 00:59 GMT)

- By MICHELLE LEE Most people celebrate Halloween by donning costumes and collecting candy. For the Rev. Theresa McReynolds, a chiropractor from Atlantic City, October is a special, holy time to honor loved ones who have died. At home, McReynolds creates a special altar with pictures and mementoes. She cooks special meals that include their favorite foods.

From Pagans to Christians (Oct 31 2007 00:59 GMT)

- By the early part of the second century it appears that the Christians, because they're no longer being viewed as a sect of Judaism, are really being considered by their pagan neighbors as another one of these foreign cults that have crept into the Roman world, and clearly in some cases it's causing a great deal of concern and consternation on the part of their neighbors. They don't know quite what to make of them. They don't know quite what they're teaching or what they're saying or what they're doing so some questions begin to come up. We tend to think of Christianity over against paganism in the Roman empire but we have to be a little bit cautious about what we mean by paganism. First of all paganism itself is really not a religion.

The first Roman tombstone found in Scotland (Oct 31 2007 00:59 GMT)

- The first Roman tombstone found in Scotland for 170 years has been unearthed at Carberry, near Inveresk. The red sandstone artefact was for a man called Crescens, a bodyguard for the governor who ran the province of Britain for the Roman Emperor. The National Museum of Scotland said the stone provided the strongest evidence yet that Inveresk was a pivotal Roman site in northern Britain. It was found by amateur enthusiast Larney Cavanagh at the edge of a field. It had been ploughed up and cleared from the field without anyone noticing its inscription.

Homosexuality and Wicca (Oct 31 2007 00:59 GMT)

- by Robert Huneault Is homosexuality compatible with male/female polarity? Over the last few decades, many people have thought that the emphasis on male/female polarity in Wicca excludes homosexuals. This view is simplistic, ignorant and false. Homosexuals as well as other people live in a world populated by men and women. They are born of men and women and most are raised by a mother and a father.

The Kingstone Tradition (Oct 31 2007 00:59 GMT)

- Author: Kalisha Zahr The Kingstone Tradition traces its origins directly to the Central Valley Wicca through both the Silver Crescent and Majestic lines. The Kingstone Tradition was formally established as an independent tradition in 1973, in conjunction with the formation of the New Wiccan Church. Core Beliefs In Kingstone, we acknowledge that all of creation stems from an unknowable Source, which is beyond human comprehension. Many of us view this Source as both immanent and transcendent.

Better Than Christmas (Oct 31 2007 00:59 GMT)

- by Jason Pitzl-Waters Halloween is an important holiday for many modern Pagans, but it is also becoming an increasingly important holiday for just about everyone else too. The Montreal Gazette takes a look at the long history of Halloween, from pre-Christian holiday to ever-expanding secular celebration. The Gazette article also touches on how gays in the 1970s helped revive adult celebration of Halloween, which soon spread into the mainstream in the 80s and 90s. But why is Halloween so much more popular now? Why do we pursue the frightening?

A spirited group (Oct 31 2007 00:59 GMT)

- BY ALLISON GARVEY She begins by casting a circle. "I now do conjure this Samhain hedge between the worlds. Be the halo of the Goddess, our circle of protection, power, truth and love," Wiccan high priestess Kori Millercalled, drawing an invisible circle in the candlelight around the coven members with her hand. On Wednesday, 14 men and women gathered in Selinsgrove at Miller's shop, Moonbeams in a Jar, to celebrate Samhain -- pronounced sowan -- the final holiday of the Wiccan calendar when Wiccans honor and communicate with their ancestors, give thanks for the abundance of the harvest and shed negative habits before entering the new spiritual year. Just before sunset, with a light north, northwest wind blowing outside the door, Miller walked deosil, or clockwise, around the circle she'd cast, invoking the quarters -- inviting the energy of each compass point, earth, air, fire and water, into the circle -- and then called to the Goddess and God:

Gibraltar Point Lighthouse (Oct 31 2007 00:59 GMT)

- The parks system at Toronto Island is truly one of the most spectacular in the city. Everything from the Centreville amusement park -- with it's Haunted Barrel Ride-- to a small community can be found here, and on a warm summer's day, it is probably one of the most interesting walks one can take. The island also contains some sites of historical significance, including a blockhouse that protected the harbour during the War of 1812 between the Americans and the British (Canadians), the ballpark where Babe Ruth smacked his first professional home run against the Toronto Maple Leafs baseball team, and the infamous Gibraltar Point Lighthouse.

Samhain as a religious holiday (Oct 31 2007 00:59 GMT)

- by Trish Reynolds Our European ancestors recognized only two basic seasons: the growing season of the light half of the year and the dead season of the dark half of the year. Winter was the dead time of the year where fields lay fallow and the weather made travel difficult. They had to be self reliant to survive the rigors of the time. In the Celtic culture, between these two halves fell Samhain, a day and a night which was literally between time.

Opinions differ on safety of eating microwave popcorn at home (Oct 31 2007 00:59 GMT)

- The smell of buttery microwave popcorn can be intoxicating. But can it also be dangerous? The question took on new significance recently when a doctor alerted U.S. federal regulatory agencies that a Colorado man who ate at least two bags every night for several years had "significant lung disease" similar to that seen in some microwave popcorn workers.

Bring back the Greek gods (Oct 31 2007 00:59 GMT)

- By Mary Lefkowitz Prominent secular and atheist commentators have argued lately that religion "poisons" human life and causes endless violence and suffering. But the poison isn't religion; it's monotheism. The polytheistic Greeks didn't advocate killing those who worshiped different gods, and they did not pretend that their religion provided the right answers. Their religion made the ancient Greeks aware of their ignorance and weakness, letting them recognize multiple points of view.

A truly spooky start (Oct 31 2007 00:59 GMT)

- by Ken Brown A truly spooky start...The Celtics and the Pagans sort of teamed up to create Halloween. I once did a column on the origin of Easter. Easter descended from a Pagan holiday. In that column I made some disparaging remarks about Pagans, which didn't go over very well with the local Pagans.

Mystical 5,000-yr-old burial ground (Oct 31 2007 00:59 GMT)

- BY MIKE QUANE The Newgrange burial mound in Ireland's County Meath dates to 3200 B.C., older than England's Stonehenge and the pyramids of Egypt. The entrance to the passage grave lines up with the winter solstice. It's older than the pyramids of Egypt and England's Stonehenge, and it's an astronomical wonder as well.

Eager to set back the clocks? (Oct 31 2007 00:59 GMT)

- NEW! In 2007 Daylight Saving Time begins on the second Sunday in March and ends on the first Sunday in November. This pattern will be followed by all provinces which observe daylight saving time and each province has amended their legislation to reflect this change. Previously, Canada had observed Daylight Saving Time from the first Sunday in April until the last Sunday in October. This change in Daylight Saving Time will keep Canada's Daylight Saving Time pattern consistent with the United States which enacted into law a broad energy bill that will extend Daylight Saving Time in the same manner.

American Spirituality: Bringing Indigenous Sensibility to Modern Faith (Oct 31 2007 00:59 GMT)

- by Mandi For many years I sought my spirituality on distant shores; looked for myself in the obelisks of Egypt, and the Dakinis of the Far East. While I found enriching relationships outside of biological ones, and a deeper understanding of self, often inspired by unity found in unexpected places, I always felt that I was an occupant of the guest house. I was never at home, and felt like a visitor, even within my own soul. When I turned my eyes homeward, past the monuments of the Celts and the Druids, and no longer had fingers that desired to trace the connections between the pre Christian European spiritualities, I found myself sitting in the dust of my desired beliefs.

Today?s Hidden Slave Trade (Oct 31 2007 00:59 GMT)

- The woman testifying in federal court in Lower Manhattan could hardly have seemed more insignificant. She was an immigrant from South Korea and a prostitute, who spoke little or no English. She worked, she said, in brothels in New York, Philadelphia, Georgia, Connecticut, Rhode Island and Washington, D.C. She did not offer a portrait of the good life.
