The Trusted Advisor - from the book by David Maister. [Rob Hook] (Oct 31 2007 23:39 GMT) - Credence-UK - maximising profits through growth relies on that one key ingredient - TRUST It has been estimated that on average it costs 4 - 7 times the amount to secure new business from new clients than it does to secure the same amount of business from an existing client. In my experience as a consultant, where it can take anything up to 6 months to get a new client onboard, I would say this estimate is on the low side. |

KY-Gov: Fletcher Falls Under 40 Percent in Two New Polls (Oct 31 2007 23:37 GMT) - If you're an incumbent Governor trailing your challenger by a double-digit margin less than a week out from election day, you probably would rather not see your numbers drop from the upper-30s to 40 percent to the mid-30s. But such is the case for Kentucky's Republican Governor Ernie Fletcher, who is polling way down in the mid-30s in two new polls matching him up against Democrat Steve Beshear. The Digital Diamond District (Oct 31 2007 23:35 GMT) - It may be the largest consumer purchase in Web history--and also the most unlikely. This June, online jeweler Blue Nile sold a single diamond for $1.5 million. The buyer, who had made smaller purchases on the Web site before, called Blue Nile's 1-800 customer service line with his request for a stone that, at over 10 carats, would engulf most fingers--it has a diameter roughly the size of a penny. |

Miami Vice - Kabul style (Oct 31 2007 23:35 GMT) - It was a flying squad bust – Afghan style. General Paktiawal sped down Kabul’s mean streets at the head of a column of his gun-toting detectives. Yet resplendent in a silver-grey Armani suit, slicked-back hair and bling ring, the man in charge looked more Miami Vice than the Sweeney. |

The Bartender Who Started It All (Oct 31 2007 23:35 GMT) - In 1863, an English traveler named Edward Hingston walked into the Occidental Hotel in San Francisco and stepped up to the bar. There he beheld a magnificent figure wielding two mixing glasses and "all ablaze with diamonds," a jewelry display that included a clustered stickpin in his shirtfront, diamond cufflinks and an array of diamond rings. Just as dazzling were the drinks, unheard of in Britain: strange mixtures like crustas, smashes and daisies. Here was something to write home about. |

Are manual transmissions really better for the environment? (Oct 31 2007 23:35 GMT) - I've read that cars with manual transmissions get 8 percent better gas mileage than their automatic counterparts. I'm certainly no gearhead, but doesn't that mean that manuals are a lot better for the planet? Can I dramatically reduce my carbon footprint (as well as save some cash at the pump) by switching to a stick shift? |

Megafauna: Remarkable Prehistoric Animals (Oct 31 2007 23:35 GMT) - Extinct Animals. Normally one would hear those words used to describe the dinosaurs - or perhaps the Dodo Bird. But what people don't often think of are the thousands of interesting creatures that lived and died on this planet of ours in the "in-between" years. The last dinosaurs vanished 65 million years ago, the last Dodo died over 300 years ago. The millions of years between the two (The Cenozoic Era) have been populated (off and on) by some of the largest mammals the world has ever seen. |

Halloween D.I.Y Project: Make Your Own Zombie (Oct 31 2007 23:35 GMT) - One of the most overlooked yet incredibly useful personal productivity tools available today is the zombie. Though incapable of many creative tasks, they are ideal for most corporate work, and suitable for all manner of tasks requiring physical strength, repetitive actions, risk to life and limb, or the death of your enemies. What's more, zombies work for free (though you must remember never to feed them anything with salt in it). What better way is there to Get Things Done? |

Intego: Phishing trojan targets OS X (Oct 31 2007 23:34 GMT) - Security vendor Intego claims to have found a new trojan attack that targets Apple's OS X operating system but competing security firms (McAfee, Symantec, and Trend Micro) have yet to find samples of the trojan. Intego said that malware authors spammed Mac forums with links to pornographic websites hosting the malware. If confirmed, the trojan would be the first piece of truly malicious software to be targeted at OS X, as opposed to the various proof-of-concept attacks that researchers have previously developed. The OSX. |
