Following the 2006 midterms, when the Democrats swept to victory at least in part as a result of the strong swing of Hispanic voters away from the GOP (Democratic House candidates' victory among Latinos went from 11 points in 2004 to 39 points in 2006; individual Democratic House candidates like Gabby Giffords and Ciro Rodriguez won races in slightly Republican districts significantly on the basis of their immigration positions), I figured that folks inside the Beltway might realize that immigration is a winning issue, not a losing one, for the Democrats. Apparently not. |
