Thailand 'can afford' higher drug prices (Dec 17 2007 01:58 GMT) - General News - Monday December 17, 2007Bangkok PostThailand 'can afford' higher drug pricesCountry rich enough to meet share of R&DAPIRADEE TREERUTKUARKULThailand is not a poor country and can afford to pay a little more for patented medicine, although not as much as rich countries, according to Jeffrey Sachs, special adviser to the United Nations secretary-general. Mr Sachs, a professor of health policy and management at Columbia University, said since Thailand is a middle-income level country with a gross national product of US$3,000 a year it should be able to bear higher research and development costs of brand-name pharmaceutical companies, not just the production costs.''It does seem to me that the right answer is to pay a little bit more than the poor countries. But not anything like what the rich country market would charge. |

Early voters ill-informed on candidates (Dec 17 2007 01:58 GMT) - General News - Monday December 17, 2007Bangkok PostEarly voters ill-informed on candidatesSURASAK GLAHANAyutthaya _ Voters from the Northeast working in this central province flocked to cast ballots in Phra Nakhon Sri Ayutthaya district yesterday, but many said they had only limited information about the candidates they voted for. Many voters, who had registered to go to the polls a week early instead of having to travel long distances to their hometowns to vote next weekend, said their decisions were mainly influenced by relatives at home or political canvassers.Voters are normally required to cast their ballots in their home constituencies but those that registered beforehand were allowed to vote from afar in advance polling that took place over the weekend.Only a few voters in Ayutthaya interviewed by the Bangkok Post said they were familiar with the names of the candidates. Most admitted they had no idea who the people they were voting for were. |
