Flower show leads to Chiang Mai price war (Dec 17 2007 02:21 GMT) - Business News - Monday December 17, 2007Bangkok PostTOURISM MARKETINGFlower show leads to Chiang Mai price warCHADAMAS CHINMANEEVONGHoteliers in Chiang Mai foresee no end to the price war that has resulted from an oversupply of rooms that arose ahead of the Royal Flora Ratchaphruek 2006 exposition. The northern province currently has an estimated 25,000 hotel rooms, compared with 17,000 before the three-month international horticultural exposition opened in November 2006. Most of the rooms are budget and middle-scale hotels, according to data from the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT).Another 500 to 600 rooms are due to open in the first quarter of next year with the completion of new five-star hotels, according to Phairoj Suksundee, the director of sales for the Holiday Inn Chiang Mai.He said the problem was compounded by the conversion of some serviced apartments to accommodate daily guests and thus functioning like hotels. |

Owner-built homes to rise in poor economy (Dec 17 2007 02:20 GMT) - Business News - Monday December 17, 2007Bangkok PostOwner-built homes to rise in poor economyCosts less than buying mid-range condoSOMPORN THAPANACHAIEconomic difficulties may lead to an increase in owner-built houses, says Piched Maneerattanaporn, the managing director of the builder Landy Home (Thailand) Co.He said most owner-built units had two storeys, but that the trend was moving toward compact city homes with more floors so owners would retain their usable space.Several home builders offer three-storey designs but their sizes are large and construction costs are high at five to six million baht a unit, he said.Landy believes that there will be more demand for city homes with usable areas of 150-200 square metres at prices between two million and three million baht. The company plans to introduce designs for three-storey units next year. |

A cheaper, greenerway to meet (Dec 17 2007 02:19 GMT) - Business News - Monday December 17, 2007Bangkok PostA cheaper, greenerway to meetAlready under fire from environmentalists for its greenhouse gas emissions, the aviation industry is set to come under direct assault from telecommunications and IT companies targeting the business travel market. At the UN Framework for Climate Change Conference in Bali last week, executives of Climate Risk Pty Ltd were publicising a report prepared for the Australian telecoms company Telstra, saying that multinational organisations could save billions of dollars in costs and cut millions of tons in greenhouse gas emissions by replacing long-haul, short-duration business travel with videoconferencing.Dr Karl Mallon, director of science and systems at Climate Risk, said the same factors that revolutionised mobile phones would apply in the case of videoconferencing as improving technological quality, higher bandwidth and lower costs would make it an increasingly feasible option for any company or institution in a globalised, interconnected world. He said that in Australia, a company setting up a videoconferencing room for A$250,000, plus the time charges, would soon recoup the investment both in actual costs as well as increased productivity by staff members who wouldn't need to waste time on aircraft and in airports. It would also allow executives to maintain a better work/life balance and help countries meet their national targets for cutting greenhouse gas emissions, he said. |

Movie Review: Pépé Le Moko and The Battle of Algiers (Dec 17 2007 02:14 GMT) - The two best films ever made about The Casbah also happen to be two of the best films ever made. The two best films ever made about The Casbah also happen to be two of the best films ever made. Pépé Le Moko and The Battle of Algiers make such similar use of the fabled old Algiers neighborhood that there are a few exterior rooftop shots in both films that seemed to me to have been taken from almost the same place. |
