Parties differ on funds for mass transit (Dec 17 2007 02:09 GMT) - Business News - Monday December 17, 2007Bangkok PostParties differ on funds for mass transit15-baht fare pledges raise eyebrowsARANEE JAIIMSINAll major political parties aim to use transport infrastructure, in particular Bangkok mass transit, to revitalise the shrinking construction sector, though they differ on how to pay for and manage the systems.Aungsurus Areekul, the secretary-general of the Thai Contractors Association, said construction project value in 2007 declined by 50% from the previous year as a result of stagnant real estate markets in line with the delay of previous government's megaprojects such as the skytrain and dual-track rail projects.Nevertheless, none of the projects are set out yet as sources of funds could not be finalised until now, including 165.4-billion-baht for five electric rail routes approved by the Surayud Chulanont government last November. The Democrat, People Power, Chartthai, Puea Pandin and Machimathipataya parties say the delay of the rail projects has led to an economic slowdown. |

Slated Combustion Turbines nearer to the Bayview Hunters Point Community - shot down. (Dec 17 2007 02:03 GMT) - The slated Combustion Turbines - also known as small power plants that will use fossil fuel have been shot down by the Regulatory Agencies. One determining factor - the San Francisco Public Utilities Staff - were NOT honest - in other words they LIED. They lied about data linked to the emissions from the Mirant Power Plant and they lied about the precise location of the proposed Combustion Turbines (CTs). In short they tried to pull a fast one, with the Regulatory Agencies - and in doing so have to deal with severe consequences. |

EC's task is to keep it fair (Dec 17 2007 02:03 GMT) - General News - Monday December 17, 2007Bangkok PostEC's task is to keep it fairWith a highly charged election fast approaching, one of the country's toughest jobs is to be a member of the Election Commission (EC). Full commissioners and staff, both at the Bangkok headquarters and up-country branches, are directly in the spotlight. The EC and each of its members must not only do the right thing in a combative campaign, they must always be seen to be doing the right thing. This is why the EC's recent decision to clear the Council for National Security (CNS) is controversial at the least, and is troubling to some.Letting the CNS off a very controversial charge without so much as a mild rebuke opened the EC to charges of excessive leniency in speaking to power. |
