Entering 2008, IPOs are booming ? but not necessarily blooming (Jan 02 2008 14:59 GMT) - Some 31 companies backed by venture capital firms went public in the fourth quarter, the highest number since the third quarter of the boom year 2000. The state of Iraq as it enters 2008 (Jan 02 2008 14:59 GMT) - Wednesday, January 2, 2008 :Media reports about New Year parties in parts of Baghdad cannot disguise the fact that Iraqis have little to look forward to in 2008, and even less to celebrate about 2007. Last year was yet another of death, destruction and suffering. Even the incomplete data complied by the Associated Press-which only include reported deaths and exclude so-called insurgents who were killed in combat with US and Iraqi government forces-show that at least 18,610 civilians died as a result of violence. |

Douglas Hord posted a new blog entry: I just have to repost this (Jan 02 2008 14:59 GMT) - I just have to repost thisFrom today's Hullabaloo, written by tristeroWednesday, January 02, 2008 Click And Munch Time by tristero Yesterday, I saw Denzel Washington's excellent new film, The Great Debaters, the inspiring story of a debating team from a tiny black college in Texas in 1935. There is much to say about this film - including the portrayal of an emerging African-American middle-class, something that Hollywood rarely deigns to address. But I had an odd thought, after seeing it, connected to my previous post. While watching "The Great Debaters," I was struck by how everyone is actively, intensely involved in the cultural and political concerns of the film. Of course, such a response to the racism portrayed makes disengagement by anyone, including we viewers, impossible. |

On the eve of the Iowa caucuses Corporate money, media manipulation and the US elections (Jan 02 2008 14:58 GMT) - Wednesday, January 2, 2008 :Thursday night's Democratic and Republican precinct caucuses in Iowa mark the official beginning of the 2008 presidential campaign, although the race has actually been under way for more than a year. The massive media focus on Iowa (January 3), the New Hampshire primary (January 8) and other early contests serves more to obscure than to illuminate the fundamental social and political issues involved in the selection of the candidates who will represent the two major parties in the November election. |
