CES 2008: "I peed next to Bill Gates at CES. Of course I looked down..." (Jan 07 2008 23:37 GMT) - Waiting in line for a Bill Gates keynotes speech is tough. Last year, they served us food and wine. This year, err, the budget was obviously cut back a few notches. When faced with a few hours' wait without any booze, Kat got resourceful, and nabbed France's most famous blogger, Loic Le Meur, for an impromptu video interview. |

CES 2008: Huge thanks to the following companies... (Jan 07 2008 23:37 GMT) - There are a couple of companies out there in this plugged-in world which Tech Digest and Shiny Shiny would just like to raise their foot-long margaritas to, who've helped with kitting us out to the max, ensuring our laptops are as light as the free beer served at CES parties, and we won't turn an embarrassing shade of red when a Gizmodo buy walks past and spies us using a digital camera held together by duct tape. It was an emergency internal operation gone wrong after a seaside accident, I swear! A huge thanks goes out to these... |

It's all relative.. somehow (Jan 07 2008 23:37 GMT) - The theory of relativity may have come super easy to Einstein and other brainy glasses wearing bods, but to us mere mortals it's all a bit hocus pocus really. I started reading the |

CES 2008: Show us your green gadgets! (Jan 07 2008 23:37 GMT) - There has been a slow yet persistent splurge of green announcements since CES kicked off, although, as Ashley commented over on Tech Digest, not nearly enough. Panasonic proudly kicked off its EMRM manufacturers' recycling campaign, pulling other giants like Sony on board. Although this is new to the US (and US-only), there are European initiatives like this already in place. Other than that it's been the smaller companies that are holding up the green end. Here's a quick run down of what we've heard on the eco-friendly front: |

CES 2008: Sony showcase the Rolly. WTF? (Jan 07 2008 23:37 GMT) - What do MP3 players need to progress to? Well, according to Sony, it's not increased storage, better battery life or a better screen. It's an MP3 player that rolls around the floor, dancing to the music and moving its parts. It seems so obvious now... |

CES 2008: Microvision unveil their mini mobile projector (Jan 07 2008 23:37 GMT) - Picture it: You've got a brand new swanky mobile which can play you the entirety of The Bourne Ultimatum. You settle down to watch it, and within five minutes you're cross-eyed with the effort of trying to see all the detail on the tiny screen. |

CES 2008: Alienware gaming monitor embraces its curves (Jan 07 2008 23:37 GMT) - It's always a pleasure when a company encourages us to embrace our curves. In this instance, it's Alienware bringing on the 2880 x 900 resolution ultimate gaming monitor. It's the equivalent of a couple of WXGA+ monitors glued side by side and is bound to be a more immersive experience with better peripheral vision. It's available in the second half the year (and fear not, the pixellation in the video is YouTube compression-related, not indicative of the actual quality). |

CES 2008: Bill Gates Keynote speech - a bluffer's guide (Jan 07 2008 23:37 GMT) - If you'd have told me that today I'd be posting a picture of Matthew McConaughey playing personal trainer to Bill Gates, I wouldn't have believed you. But here it is! Apparently, when he steps down from the Microsoft later in the year, Gates will be filling his time rapping with Jay-Z, auditioning for Spielberg movies and persuading George Clooney to play him in a movie, as well as buffing up with Matt. All this stuff is from a skit played as part of Gates' final CES keynote speech, which I have to say was miles better than last year's subdued, celeb free offering. This time we had Slash playing Guitar Hero... |

CES 2008: Sony Vaio TP Home Theatre PCs (Jan 07 2008 23:37 GMT) - More news from the press conference in the form of some rather odd looking home theatre PCs. They're a fairly unique squashed cyclinder shape and offer built-in DVR functionality capable of recording up to 50 hours of HD TV programming, as well as in-built Blu-ray players. |

CES 2008: Samsung BD-UP5500 Blu-ray and HD DVD dual player for HD virgins (Jan 07 2008 23:37 GMT) - Even if HD DVD has made a shock exit from the arena, there's no harm in announcing a dual player and, indeed, that's what Samsung has done. It's designed for those who are new to the whole HD world and in an Honoree for the CES 2008 Innovation Award. The BD-UP5500 is a fully functional Blu-ray player, including Bonus View in a sleek, slim cabinet, also offering HD DVD playback. |

CES 2008: Panasonic Press Conference - Home Theater and Blu-ray (Jan 07 2008 23:37 GMT) - Panasonic has debuted slim DVD home cinema systems this year, with three new models packing iPod docks, wireless rear speakers, five-disc DVD changers and easy input. On top of that there's a wireless model, the SC-BT100, which has an integrated Blu-ray player. Today was, for obvious reasons, a great day for Panasonic to affirm its Blu-ray support. |

A slew of new announcements includes Viera TVs, camcorders, a Blu-ray home theatre, Lumix cameras and more has come out of this, but there's apparently more to come tomorrow. |

CES 2008: 'Black is the new black' - Toshiba announce five series' of black high gloss LCD high definition TVs. (Jan 07 2008 23:37 GMT) - Toshiba may have had some bad news this week, but that didn't stop them from getting excited about their new TVs. Five series' of new tellies were put on show at the press conference, all LCD (which apparently now makes up 84% of the market when it comes to flat screen TVs - at least Tosh backed the winner in one format war, eh?). Ranging from $429 to over $3000, there's supposedly a telly for everyone, all in shiny black high gloss (black is the new black when it comes to tech, apparently). I'll warn you there's a lot of jargon under the cut, but if you want to know more about some of the many new HD tellies to be launched at CES, all the info is coming up... |

CES 2008: Toshiba's response to Warner Bros decision to back Blu-ray over HD DVD (Jan 07 2008 23:37 GMT) - So Warner Bros are backing Blu-ray in the high definition format war, and the HD DVD press conference at CES has been cancelled. It's no surprise then that press packed into the Toshiba press conference this morning to hear what they have to say about the supposed 'death' of HD-DVD. Toshiba CEO Akio Ozaka took to the stage first to explain he was "suprised by Warner Bros' announcement" but it was Jodi Sally, VP of marketing for the Digital A/V department, who really had to mop up the mess and once again let us know that this is not the end for HD DVD. We got it all on video... |

CES 2008: LG disappoints with "MPH" mobile television announcement (Jan 07 2008 23:37 GMT) - You had to be up bright and early to get into LG's 8am press conference this morning, but according to Tech Digest's Kat Hannaford, it wasn't worth it. Half an hour of build-up created a general feeling of expectation that some amazing Bluray player might be announced, or that there might be a response to the HD DVD announcements of the last couple of days. |
