Which Execution Method Causes the Least Discomfort (to the Public)? (Jan 08 2008 23:36 GMT) - Judging from yesterday's oral arguments over what standard to use in determining whether an execution method violates the Eighth Amendment, the Supreme Court is not inclined to order changes in the way states put people to death. But the arguments touched on a point that struck me the last time I wrote about these cases: Decisions about execution methods have less to do with the comfort of the condemned man than with the comfort of the people watching him die. |

....from the shadows and shine. (Jan 08 2008 23:35 GMT) - Posted by: Sampson - I find myself detachedly viewing a drama inside an old alchemist’s workshop the room has a very particular atmosphere sort of from the medieval and Enlightenment period all at once. I see a wizened old man with long grey hair he is dressed in a long fawn colored gown with a peculiar long and lumpy cream colored floppy night cap like hat. I’m aware that the man is Isaac Newton and that in my dream he is not the mathematical scientist of renown but is an alchemist of the spiritual and psychological realms. As Isaac walks about his workshop he is visited by the physical embodiment o... |

Compressed air + gas = air-powered hybrid car (Jan 08 2008 23:35 GMT) - Filed under: Transportation Hybrid cars are great, what with their higher emm pee gees and all, but there's still one significant issue with the increasingly popular tech: one component of that hybrid relationship happens to be fossil-fuelicious petroleum products. The hybrid Air Car isn't looking to remove that component but, using three dollars worth of pressurized air, they are looking to minimize it for city driving. We've already seen totally air-driven vehicles using the same technology by Indian auto giant Tata, which see you clipping along at one horsepower, going 70 mph for around 120 miles, but what if you need more? |

Visualising Fitts' Law (Jan 08 2008 23:35 GMT) - [OSNews] - I detailed Fitts' Law not too long ago in one of my usability terms articles (the series will pick up later on, by the way, I am currently too busy with my bachelor's thesis), and this article is a very detailed addition. It is a little old (October 2007), though. "Back in school, I remember that it wasn't until I started taking classes in physics that calculus made any kind of real sense to me. I just need diagrams to function. |

Torvalds also said Linux was the project that made the split clear between the religious belief in freedom advocated by the Free Software Foundation and the technical superiority that open source and Linux have always been about. |
