The McCain Nightmare Deepens (Jan 31 2008 18:32 GMT) - Hugh Hewit has some pointed but spot on analysis of the very angry, defensive John McCain we saw last night, and Mark Steyn adds:... As for his line about "some greedy people on Wall Street who need to be punished", aside from being almost entirely irrelevant to the subject under discussion (the subprime "crisis"), it reveals, I think, one of the most unpleasant aspects of McCain. For a so-called "maverick", he's very comfortable with the application of Big Government power, and the assumption of Big Government virtue. Undoubtedly there are "greedy people on Wall Street". Why should he and his chums be the ones who decide whether they need to be "punished"? |

Story told of murdered nun (AP) (Jan 31 2008 18:32 GMT) - AP - "The Greatest Gift" (Doubleday, 256 pages, $21.95), by Binka Le Breton: Dorothy Stang wasn't an average nun. She didn't wear a habit or retreat to a convent for pious prayer and contemplation. She rode a motorcycle over rutted dirt roads, enjoyed watching football games with a cold beer in her hand and lived for 40 years among some of Brazil's poorest people. |

Hands-on with Fujifilm's new FinePix lineup (Jan 31 2008 18:31 GMT) - Filed under: Digital Cameras So where do you turn if you want the DSLR-like ergonomics but you're not big on the idea of picking which glass will be the best bet on your shoot? Fujifilm has some stuff to show you. New models to the FinePix lineup start out with the S100fd which lays claim to the world's smallest 12x zoom camera. Hopefully the "Picture Stabilization" will produce crisp looking shots from the 10-megapixels when the lens is racked out without boosting the ISO to grainytown. |

Biting commentary (Jan 31 2008 18:30 GMT) - Jim Sullivan gives us something to chew on with his four-part series on how he got all his upper teeth replaced with implants (that link takes you to the last part, but it has links to the first three). Featuring an entire chronicle of his family's dental past (a doctor convinced his grandfather that the cure for a rash on his leg was to have all his teeth pulled; didn't work), as well as proof that a visit to the dentist can be a real gas, if he lets you administer your own nitrous oxide: ... He told me that anytime I felt more pain, I should have another pump or two. |
