Sundance Review: Nerakhoon (The Betrayal) (Jan 31 2008 19:02 GMT) - Filed under: Documentary, Independent, Sundance, Theatrical Reviews, Cinematical IndieNerakhoon (The Betrayal), the feature directorial debut of cinematographer Ellen Kuras, took 23 years to make. The film, about a family caught in the tides of war, is as much a history lesson about a part of the Vietnam War that is little known as it is a story of how co-director Thavisouk Phrasavath came to America at the age of 14 with his mother and nine siblings after his homeland, Laos fell to the Communists. Thavi's father, a former commander with the Royal Laotian army, was recruited by the CIA to work intelligence along the Ho Chi Minh trail during the Vietnam War, as a part of the United States goverment's clandestine operations from Laos during the war. When the United States withdrew from Laos, Pathet Lao gained power and Thavi's father was declared an enemy of the state and sent to a "re-education" camp. |

After more than 100 years apart, webworms devastate New Zealand parsnips (Jan 31 2008 19:01 GMT) - The effects of infestation are dramatic. On the left, a nearly completely devastated New Zealand parsnip. On the right, an unaffected plant. What could be lower than the lowly parsnip, a root once prized for its portable starchiness but which was long ago displaced by the more palatable potato? Perhaps only the parsnip webworm gets less respect. |

'Telepathic' genes recognize similarities (Jan 31 2008 19:01 GMT) - British scientists have discovered genes can recognize similarities in each other from a distance without the aid of biological molecules.Imperial College London researchers said their discovery might explain how similar genes find each other and group together in order to perform key processes involved in the evolution of species.Previous studies suggested proteins are involved in the recognition process when it occurs between short strands of DNA that only have about 10 pairs of chemical bases. But the new research showed much longer strands of DNA -- with hundreds of pairs of chemical bases -- seem able to recognize each other as a whole, without protein involvement. Theoretically, the recognition mechanism is stronger the longer the genes are. |
