RE: The cruel joke: Seagate RMAs (Jan 31 2008 20:04 GMT) - Believe me, only in very rare cases have I seen new drives packed like that. Most new drives I've received are just packed in a thin layer of anti-static plastic. The Seagate requirement for packaging broken drives is just insane IMHO.And besides, the drives are designed to be shock resistant. : |

Hands-On with the (Horrible) Cyber Famulator Lite (Jan 31 2008 20:04 GMT) - The one thing that would transform Nintendo's Virtual Console from excellent to mind-blowingly awesome would be the ability to offload retro titles from Wii to the DS. Sadly, Nintendo hasn't come through, so the next best thing comes from a Japanese company called Cyber Gadget. But oh, the horror... |

The 6 to 9 Review Scale (Jan 31 2008 20:04 GMT) - Online and print reviewers are making it harder to decide what product to buy, because they almost never give anything less than a 6 or more than a 9. I'm not sure why they do this exactly, but here at ET we use the whole scale. |

The Income Statement Isn't (Jan 31 2008 20:04 GMT) - Jay Cross is exactly right. "It never ceases to amaze me how many people assess the cost and benefit of projects with accounting approaches developed in Venice in the five hundred years ago." And, of course, such metrics are useless. "Organizations that make decisions based solely on things that are sufficiently tangible to be counted might as well consult a Ouija board to set their goals." Recap Of Edinburgh Talks: Lots Of Interest In New Business Models (Jan 31 2008 20:03 GMT) - As mentioned earlier this month, I was in Edinburgh, Scotland last week, after being invited over to give a series of talks at the University of Edinburgh. It was a fantastic trip, full of interesting discussions. I gave three different talks, with the second one, being the one with the most interesting reaction. It was for a graduate-level class on "digital marketplaces" and was the first time I've done a detailed talk about the economic theories we discuss around here. I was interested to see how people would react to some of the ideas, and it certainly generated a lively discussion that lived on well-past the class itself. |

DNA technique yields 3-D crystalline organization of nanoparticles (Jan 31 2008 20:01 GMT) - In an achievement some see as the "holy grail" of nanoscience, researchers at the U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory have for the first time used DNA to guide the creation of three-dimensional, ordered, crystalline structures of nanoparticles (particles with dimensions measured in billionths of a meter). The ability to engineer such 3-D structures is essential to producing functional materials that take advantage of the unique properties that may exist at the nanoscale - for example, enhanced magnetism, improved catalytic activity, or new optical properties. The research will be published in the January 31, 2008, issue of the journal Nature. |
