Notes: Chinese Funeral Gadgets Burning (Seriously) [Notes] (Jan 31 2008 21:56 GMT) - In between CES and Macworld, I thought I'd get a break. Instead, I had to deal with the CES prank fallout and my grandfather's funeral, at the same time. (Murphy's Calendar.) It was definitely the most challenging two weeks of my life in terms of physical and emotional endurance. Gadgets have always been a pleasant distraction from the more serious side of it all, and so gadgets were present at Grandpa Jimmy Eng's funeral, too, in the form of some paper mockups to be burned for use in the afterlife. |

Return of Nixon's Secret Plan to Win the War (Jan 31 2008 21:55 GMT) - In 1968 Richard Nixon ran for president arguing that "new leadership will end the war" in Vietnam. A reporter turned that nearly meaningless claim into the laughable proposition that Nixon had a "secret plan" to end the war. Nixon was happy enough to let voters imagine that there was in fact a plan - even if it was just to escalate the war - and that there was a secret - even if that meant "secret" bombings of Cambodia. John McCain has taken his cues from Nixon. The Senator from Arizona, one of the biggest boosters of the Iraq War (a distraction from capturing Osama bin Laden if ever there were), has been telling voters for months that he has his own plan to capture bin Laden. |

The Business of Death [Roundup] (Jan 31 2008 21:53 GMT) - "I saw the worst play of all time," today's Cindy Adams column begins in the NYP. She waits until halfway through to drop the real bomb: photos of Heath Ledger's body may be out there--and up for sale. What else have the vultures been trying to cash in on? 1. |
