Bella Donna: Sophia Loren (Jan 31 2008 23:30 GMT) - Sophia Loren has been gracing the silver screen for upwards of five decades with her voluptuous figure, toothy grin, flawless Italian skin, and mesmerizing eyes. Born in Rome in 1938 on the cusp of WWII, her early years were spent in the war-torn town of Pozzuoli, hiding in bomb shelters and helping her mother and sisters care for injured soldiers. She fell deeply in love with acting at age 11 during Hollywood movie night at the only theater in town. Her big break came when she was pulled off the floor at a nightclub to compete in the Miss Roma pageant, where she not only took second place, but captured the eye Carlo Ponti, a prominent film producer of the day. Despite requests from many directors, Sophia embraced her distinct looks by refusing to lose weight, get a nose job, or alter her appearance in any way for a role. |

Melvyn Krauss: A Wake-Up Call for the ECB (Jan 31 2008 23:30 GMT) - Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke has allowed global stock markets to railroad him into a whopping 75-basis-point cut in interest rates just one week before the regularly scheduled meeting of the Fed?s decision-making Open Market Committee. European Central Bank President Jean-Claude Trichet would never allow this to happen to the ECB ? he manipulates markets; markets don? |

Jeffrey D. Sachs: Recount Kenyans? Votes (Jan 31 2008 23:30 GMT) - Kenya is aflame after a presidential election on December 27 widely believed to have been rigged to secure the re-election of Mwai Kibaki. Kibaki?s opponents took to the streets, the government issued shoot-to-kill orders, and hundreds have died at the hands of the police as well as from gang rampages and inter-ethnic violence. The United States has led the international diplomatic response, but its approach has been deeply flawed. |

Jeroen van der Veer: Two Energy Futures (Jan 31 2008 23:30 GMT) - By 2100, the world?s energy system will be radically different from today?s. Renewable energy like solar, wind, hydroelectricity, and biofuels will make up a large share of the energy mix, and nuclear energy, too, will have a place. Humans will have found ways of dealing with air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. |

Richard N. Haass: What About the World? (Jan 31 2008 23:30 GMT) - As America?s primaries move beyond Iowa and New Hampshire, it is simply impossible to predict who will be the Democratic and Republican nominees, much less who will become the 44th president of the United States. But it is not too soon to address the question of what effect US foreign policy is having on the campaign and what it reveals about how Americans see the world. |
