Return of the Rock 'n Roll High Kick (Feb 01 2008 07:00 GMT) - If anyone can bring the rock ‘n roll high-kick back into the front-and-center, it’s Joe Machamer, guitarist and singer of Portland power trio Dark Skies. This long-forgotten show-stopper has nearly ceased to exist in this, the age of the pseudo-emotional singer-songwriter. Why? |

Howie and the Hotknives Cuttin' It Up at Slabtown (Feb 01 2008 07:00 GMT) - Once when I was working at a chocolate store on NW 23rd Avenue, I caught a glimpse of Stephen Malkmus walking down the street. I think that this is as close as I will ever get to seeing Malkmus live. Stephen Malkmus and his accompanying Jicks are playing at the Doug Fir tonight with Blitzen Trapper (see blog entry below). Tickets are only $15 (which, depending on how you break it down, comes out to about $3 a Jick and $6 for Malkmus). So why am I not even checking to see if tickets are still available? |

Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks Rule, Period (Feb 01 2008 07:00 GMT) - This Friday you will be at the Doug Fir. I don't care what excuse you have. Your kid could have whooping cough, your bike might have a flat tire, or your cat could be on fire, but you will still be there. And why will you be there? Oh yeah, Stephen Malkmus and the freaking Jicks, that's why. |

Storm to Sam, "Nice Butt!" Sam to Storm, "But I'm GAY!!" (Feb 01 2008 07:00 GMT) - While listening to Ike Tuner and contemplating the recent move to Portland and lightning fast signing to Diatic Records of Don Cherry's son, pianist David Ornette Cherry.... Jazztronica, trumpeter Derek Sims' multiple collaborations with Auditory Sculpture (Keith Schreiner) and others had its CD release at Pi-Rem last Friday, 12/14. I wrote about both the band and the club here last month. The night before, they opened for Storm Large at her Holiday Cabaret at the Wonder ... |

Best Portland Musical Moments of 2007 (Feb 01 2008 07:00 GMT) - Rather than run down a list of the best albums released by Portland bands this year, I thought I would instead talk about the greatest musical moments of the past year that I witnessed in our fair city. I encourage you to add to this list in our comments section. 1. Spoon's obscenely good shows at the Doug Fir Lounge this past May. 2. |

Pierced Arrows II: The Conclusion (Feb 01 2008 07:00 GMT) - I am, once again, going to talk about the scraggly local rock band called Pierced Arrows, which played in a dingy club in a rough-hewn corner of Southeast Portland recently. This time I even got to see ‘em play (see my December 3rd blog). On Saturday night, they graced the low-set stage of the Twilight Cafe, which is close in on SE Powell, but still a bit out of the way, close to the Tri-Met bus yard and that tunnel that smells like concentrated piss. |

It's Raining Bands! (Feb 01 2008 07:00 GMT) - After nearly six years of living in Portland, it shouldn’t surprise me that when it rains, it pours. And I find that this is true of more than just the weather; it seems to apply to the music scene as well. case in point: |

This Year's Best Of (Feb 01 2008 07:00 GMT) - It’s the end of the year, and that can only mean one thing: Time for best-of lists. So, in honor of another year gone by, I want to offer up my top five records (along with a brief justification of their goodness) of 2007: 1. |

Lou-Ow! (Feb 01 2008 07:00 GMT) - The music community here in Portland truly does love to take care of its own. I was reminded of this recently via an e-mail sent to me by poster artist extraordinaire Dylan McConnell: We are putting together a benefit for Lou Thomas...to help him pay medical bills, next Sunday December 16th. The Lou Thomas he is referring to is the co-founder of the band Chores as well as the bassist in the folk/pop outfit A Weather. |

Shmoooze, News, Booze, Food and Prizes at the Music Millennium Party (Feb 01 2008 07:00 GMT) - The Music Millennium Christmas party never changes. I mean holiday party, don't I? It is a place where Portland music industry execs, flacks, musicians and their kids gather to eat, drink, schmooze and win prizes on owner Terry Currier's tab. At the entrance to the lower hall at The Melody Ballroom, there's a table of free CDs, DVDs, t-shirts and other tchochkes — and Terry Currier, who seems to know everybody. |

You Hum It, The Punk Group Will Play It (Feb 01 2008 07:00 GMT) - As I mentioned last week, my intent here is to get my hands on as much free schwag as possible. So off I went, to snag The Punk Group's new DVD, The Punk Group From Outer Space. I figured that I’d mention this blog and presto! A promo copy would appear in my hands. |
