Chez Jose: Chow With a Conscience (Feb 01 2008 08:28 GMT) - Last Saturday we were dragging the kids around town in the rain in pursuit of the perfect Danish Modern credenza and realized that we couldn’t possibly cruise another mid-century furniture showplace without some sustenance. Boldly, we rejected Burgerville, usually a standby when kids’ low blood sugar threatens to derail the whole adult plan. At random we stopped into Chez Jose West, which turned out to be a good choice for a number of reasons. |

And Deliver Us Some Pizza... (Feb 01 2008 08:28 GMT) - With all the news reports insisting we are moments from complete white-out by a catastrophic blizzard, it seemed like a sound idea to stay in and huddle in front of the fire. But one quick glimpse at the cold, empty shelves and drawers of the fridge ended such optimistic thoughts like cooking that nice recipe I’ve been meaning to try out. Should I go to the grocery store? Nah, there’ |

Kalga Kafe's Fennel-Balsamic Dressing (Feb 01 2008 08:28 GMT) - Where is a girl to go for sustenance when it's late and there’s no ready-made food in the house? Well, first she and her boyfriend consult their Chinook Book and find an unused coupon for the intriguing vegetarian place on Division. Decided, they head out at 9:30pm on a Sunday night to Kalga Kafe to find some vittles. |

New Albina Press Opening in SE (Feb 01 2008 08:28 GMT) - Right now, my closest source for great local coffee is the Division Stumptown. But all that is about to change when Albina Press opens a second café on Upper Hawthorne, just a brisk 15 minutes from my house. The construction and blog buzz have been going on for months, but the real deal is just days away. |

Major Fun at Ground Kontrol (Feb 01 2008 08:28 GMT) - There are a geeky couple of blocks in Portland that burn bright for the urban retro warrior. A strip of NW 5th Avenue in Old Town just off Burnside hoards a choice comic book shop, two fantastic galleries attached to hip clothing stores and a futuristic café called Backspace. But before you settle on that mug of Stumptown and a cheap, delicious vegetarian treat at the cafe, you might feel a strong tug at your soul and all the remaining quarters in your pocket. It’ |

Stop for a NY Minute... (Feb 01 2008 08:28 GMT) - And stuff some cheesecake in your face! No, really, I ate the best piece of unadulterated cheesecake here that I’ve eaten in the last two years of my life. Portland does not have many places to get things plain. This girl found that out early in PDX when a late night craving hit. |

A New Years Day Brunch Feast in the Gorge (Feb 01 2008 08:28 GMT) - Exactly one week ago, on day one of 2008, I experienced the "World Famous Farm Breakfast" at Simon’s the Columbia Gorge Hotel. This fine restaurant, snuggled into this circa-1921 hotel, presented both classics (Eggs Benedict, Crab Louis) and more obscure entrees (Pumpkin Sachette, like little pumpkin pie dumplings in creamy pumpkin soup, with a small mess of wilted, bitter spinach in the center to cut the sweet, and dots of macerated cherries around the outside to spike it). |

Romo's Latin Quarter Coming to Montavilla (Feb 01 2008 08:28 GMT) - Fans of margaritas, carnitas and green chile chicken enchiladas, who are despairing the disappearance of Romo’s La Jara from Upper Hawthorne, need fret no more. Romalo Rivera has moved operations to 7915 SE Stark (just west of Country Cat), and the sign now says Romo’s Latin Quarter. With red walls and a wooden bar, the place looks to be a scaled-up version of La Jara, which was small, family-friendly and offered gigantic portions, fabulous homemade chips, tasty enchilada sauces, great salsa and excellent rice and beans that were stars themselves, not just sides rounding out the entré |
