The Incompatibility of Green and Orange (Feb 29 2008 19:01 GMT) - Founding IRSP member Jim Daly argues in his presentation at the RSYM Winter School that Green and Orange are incompatible, and that the traditional failure of Republican leaderships left and right to recognize this is part of the reason for the present debacle. Jim argues that only Republican socialist leaders such as Connolly and Costello were free of the illusion of their compatibility. |

RIAA is not paying artists from settlement proceeds (Feb 29 2008 19:00 GMT) - Though the trade group has made headlines with their aggressive anti-piracy programs, those who are supposed to benefit from them - the artists - are apparently not being compensated with the proceeds from the lawsuits. Along with a number of smaller suits, the labels have successfully collected hundreds of millions of dollars - $270 million from Napster alone - but according to the New York Post, a contingent of prominent artist managers claims that little to none of that money has trickled down to their clients. They are now considering legal action. Record label sources said corporate bosses are still deciding on how best to split the money. In determining the payout, they said not every artist is owed money and it must be calculated with regard to the level of copyright infringement for each artist. |

Students Slow to Embrace Campus Text Alerts (Feb 29 2008 19:00 GMT) - If there's one thing generally true of students today, it's that they're glued to their cell phones. Whether talking with friends and family, sending and receiving messages, or checking their social networking profiles, today's youth rarely do anything without a mobile phone close at hand. However, comparatively few students are embracing what would seem to be a welcome and important mobile service: campus safety warnings issued via text messages. According to OmniAlert, a company which runs an emergency alert system for campuses called e2Campus, the average enrollment among students and staff at more than 500 campuses that have adopted the system is just 39 percent. |

Extract Of Broccoli Sprouts May Protect Against Bladder Cancer (Feb 29 2008 19:00 GMT) - A concentrated extract of freeze dried broccoli sprouts cut development of bladder tumors in an animal model by more than half, according to a new report. There is strong evidence that the protective action of cruciferous vegetables derives at least in part from isothyiocyanates (ITCs), a group of phytochemicals with well-known cancer preventive activities. Other cruciferous vegetables with ITCs include mature broccoli, cabbage, kale, collard greens and others. Broccoli sprouts have approximately 30 times more ITCs than mature broccoli, and the sprout extract used by the researchers contains approximately 600 times as much. Full Article : |
