Reconstructionist Paganism (Mar 01 2008 02:59 GMT) - by Trish Deneen As we move forward into the technological age of the 21st century, it may seem ironic that an emerging branch of Paganism is that of the reconstructionist movement, which looks to historic polytheistic practices and mythological sources for inspiration. Turning to pre-Christian cultures for help in constructing a meaningful religion is nothing new to neopaganism. What reconstructionists attempt to do however is steer away from eclecticism in favor of a culturally specific approach to connecting with the divine. A great deal of neopaganism has combined components of occultism and magic such as Hermetic philosophy with mythology of different cultures to create new traditions. An example of this is the use of the four elements and the magic circle used in Wiccan traditions and honoring gods from different pantheons. |

Why so many Americans are embracing witchcraft? (Mar 01 2008 02:59 GMT) - by David Kupelian So there I was, listening intently to local radio talker Bob White interviewing a witch. Yes, a real witch ? and a male one at that. The guest sounded New Agey and effeminate, but harmless enough, and painted a colorful picture of what modern-day witches, or "Wiccans," believe and do. You know, god-and-goddess worship, preparing herbal remedies, casting spells, caring for the Earth and so on ? |

'Doomsday' Seed Vault Opens in Arctic (Mar 01 2008 02:59 GMT) - By DOUG MELLGREN Sub-Zero Vault Safeguards World's Food Crops - Norway opened a frozen "doomsday" vault Tuesday deep within an Arctic mountain where millions of seeds will be stored to safeguard against wars or natural disasters wiping out food crops around the globe. Biblical references repeatedly cropped up as guests at the opening ceremony carried the first seed deposits into the vault in the remote Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard. "This is a frozen Garden of Eden," European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said, standing in one of the frosty vaults against a backdrop of large discs made of ice. Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg called the vault an "insurance policy" and added his own biblical comparison: "It is the Noah's Ark for securing biological diversity for future generations. |

The Resurgence of Paganism in Europe (Mar 01 2008 02:59 GMT) - by Hrafnkell I was Googling the other day (what a weird word!) and came across an article that increases in importance when taken alongside the study about America's declining Christian population. This study relates not to the United States but to Europe and it would seem that Europe has the same "problem." The article in question, by Michael Cooper, assistant professor of Christian Ministries in the School of Biblical and Religious Studies at Trinity International University, appeared in the Winter/Spring 2004 issue of Sacred Tribes the "Journal of Christian Missions to New Religious Movements" and is titled CONTRIBUTING FACTORS IN THE RESURGENCE OF PAGANISM IN WESTERN SOCIETY. Cooper begins by observing that "Based on? |

Early Geekhood (Mar 01 2008 02:59 GMT) - I was fascinated by my grandparents' garages. On Dad's side, Paw had the biggest freaking junkyard of a garage, littered with bits and pieces of electronics, doo-dads, colourful wires as well as the gutted hulks of appliances, radios and even an old television. There were metal shelves of what Mom referred to as crap. On Mom's side of the family, the garage was much more neat, but still held a plethora of old radios, a bullwhip (grandpa, I insisted, was a cowboy - my interpretation of "cattle buyer"), some bamboo canes, an ancient baseball bat, old tennis rackets and even a very early skateboard. I could get lost in either garage for days. |
