Danny leaves SEW (Apr 10 2008 23:00 GMT) - Man, do I know the pain he went through to make this decision. It's very hard to watch something you really love and worked so hard to build continue without you, but when you are not an owner in some way, it's harder still to understand why someone else is taking all the profits, and control, while you do all the work. I know Danny is a very reasonable guy, and the fact that he could not get the new owners of SEW to cut him in on the fruits of all his hard work means the folks running his ex-company are really not paying attention to where value is created in the media world these days. Best of luck, Danny, I am certain you will do screamingly well in whatever you do next! Updated: |

Study Analyzes 16 Months of Data Breaches (Apr 10 2008 23:00 GMT) - A new report on consumer data breaches recorded over the past 16 months indicates that hacking remains the most frequent source of data theft and loss, with breaches reported by educational institutions making up 43 percent of all reported data thefts or losses. The study was conducted by the AARP (formerly the American Association of Retired Persons) using data from 244 breaches reported from Jan. 1, 2005, through May 26, 2006. The data was compiled from publicly disclosed security breaches involving information that collectively involved nearly 90 million people, as compiled by the Identity Theft Resource Center, a San Diego-based nonprofit organization. The study found that criminal hacking was responsible for one-third of all reported breaches, while physical theft of laptops and other data storage media accounted for 29 percent. |

PS3 doesn't come with expensive wire (Apr 10 2008 23:00 GMT) - Cory Doctorow: Sony's forthcoming PS3 is touted as part of the next generation of high-definition consoles, but high-definition comes with a high price. In addition to charging 20 percent more for high-def support, Sony is also opting not to bundle the pricey high-def HDMI cables with the unit. The reason that HDMI is so expensive is that it has been designed to be that most proprietary of technologies, an anti-copying system. Sony customers are accustomed to paying giant premiums for consumables like cables and adapters and memory, thanks to Sony's addiction to deliberately introducing proprietary elements just to jack up prices (I learned this the hard way when I discovered that the power-brick for my $200 Sony speakers cost $150 to replace). |

Defcon 14 Wrapup, at Long Last (Apr 10 2008 23:00 GMT) - Security Fix is just now getting around to blogging about some of the other highlights from the Defcon hacker conference I attended this week in Las Vegas. (I had to recharge my batteries after sleeping fewer than four hours between Saturday and Monday.) I realized I never mentioned a Defcon talk from Friday given by Thomas X. Grasso, who's part of the FBI's National Cyber-Forensics and Training Alliance. Perhaps the funniest and most engaging speaker I've heard from the likes of the FBI, Grasso gave a fantastic talk about what law enforcement really means when it says most cyber criminals running spam, spyware and virus attacks on the Internet today are really just organized crime groups whose turf is the Internet. |
