Archive.org Defeats FBI's Demand For User Information (May 08 2008 14:54 GMT) - Eldavojohn writes "Although we don't know what they were after due to the settlement, a gag order was just released that kept cyberspace Archive member Brewster Kahle quiet. US State Dept. Loses Anti-Terrorist Program Laptops (May 08 2008 14:54 GMT) - Stony Stevenson writes "It has surfaced that the US State parish can't account for up to about 1,000 laptops, perhaps as many as 400 of which belonged to the department's Anti-Terrorism Assistance Program. Internal auditors found that the agency lost track of $30 million worth of analog equipment, 'the vast majority of which... perhaps as much as 99 percent,' were laptops, by the book to one official. Another official calculated that the average State area laptop costs US$3,000 and figured that meant as many as 1,000 laptops might be astray — not 10,000 laptops as the US$30 million figure suggests. |

A Copyright Cop In Every Zune (May 08 2008 14:54 GMT) - Mike writes "As if the Zune wasn't already crippled and unpopular enough, now comes a story indicating that Microsoft may build a 'Copyright Cop' into every Zune. A future update of the systems program for Microsoft's manageable media player will likely include a 'feature' that will block unauthorized copies of copyrighted videos from being played on it. The board of digital distribution for NBC, J. B. Perrette, said the plan is to create 'filtering hyperspace banking components that allows for playback of legitimately purchased content versus non-legitimately purchased content. |

Re: Hauppauge TV Tuner limits RAM to under 4 GB in 64 bit Vista? (May 08 2008 14:54 GMT) - Just some info from my "issues" with Hauppauge and Vista 64 with +4G of RAM. I have 8+G of Ram in my new PC and my PVR500MCE would "greenscreen" unless I disabled some RAM to get it under 4G. After MANY posts on Hauppauges UK forum, and a few tech support calls, they offered to RMA the tuner for the HVR1600 which works beautifully (even though its only 1 analog, 1 digital, FM. instead of the 2 analog+fm with the 500mce) But it works. Both MS and Hauppauge list the 500MCE as compatible and works with vista 64 on their websites, but if you look REAL close to the pics of the system used to test their 64bit drivers to aquire their logo from MS they only used 512M of RAM. |

Error 1304 Verify that you have ... (May 08 2008 14:53 GMT) - I have recently installed Vista Business on my XP Pro laptop. The installation was as smooth as silk but it is taking a while to familiarize myself with Vista - probably because I am old. My problem is that I am attempting to install Adobe Acrobat 8 Standard both from a CD and also by moving the files to a new folder on the desktop with the same dismal result. Error 1304 - verify that you have access to that directory etc. [at this stage the application is writing to a common folder. |

The eye of Mordor (May 08 2008 14:53 GMT) - Six days ago, the Chaitén volcano in Chile began a surprise eruption. So far, more than 8000 people have been evacuated, and NASA has tracked the results from space. Even more stunning however, are the images that occurred when a thunderstorm collided with the volcanic plume. |
