Cut Down On Injuries - Cut Down On Exhibition Games

(Oct 11 2008 18:04 GMT)
from Red Fisher of the Montreal Gazette, Does it make sense to play more games at the expense of practices, which are conducted with an eye on avoiding injuries and are the best way to do it for coaches - particularly freshman bench leaders - to work at introducing new systems to their teams? I don?t think so. What I?m really saying is that since these players are merely human, the NHL will have to take a long, hard look at the number of games its assets play when their people sit down to prepare next season?

Getting The Rinkside View

(Oct 11 2008 17:47 GMT)
from the Anaheim Ducks, The ?Rinkside View? game format combines the best of traditional hockey television expertise with more ice access thanks to low angle camera positions and a voyeuristic, as-if-you-were-there look and feel to the telecast. A total of 20 NHL games, including all six ?Freeway Faceoff?

Flyers Defense Hurting

(Oct 10 2008 18:53 GMT)
from Wayne Fish of phillBurbs, The procession to the operating room appeared to continue on Thursday when Flyers defenseman Randy Jones disclosed he probably needs right hip surgery. Jones could be out two months or more. He joins defenseman Ryan Parent, who is waiting to have surgery for repairs on a torn labrum in his right shoulder. Parent is expected to be out 12-14 weeks. Jones has undergone several MRI tests, and the pictures are being sent to specialist Dr.

Coaches Under The Gun

(Oct 10 2008 18:27 GMT)
from CBC, The nine new coaches aren?t going to be let go so capriciously, and there are at least that number who either earned another full season after 2007-08 success or are entrenched veterans ? Boudreau and Claude Julien being in the first category, and Lindy Ruff and Dave Tippett among those in the latter group. That only leaves, at most, about a dozen candidates who could be sent packing before the season is out. Here are five of those candidates:

Canadiens On The Offensive

(Oct 10 2008 18:16 GMT)
from Sean Gordon of the Globe and Mail, It?s an ironic and somewhat startling move that reveals much about this coach: a calculated decision to do away with the role he personified during a stellar 19-year playing career. As the Montreal Canadiens kick off their 100th season, Guy Carbonneau is electing not to ice a line of specialized checking forwards. Instead, he will throw his lot in with a rotation of three offensive lines that will share more or less equal slices of ice time, and an aggressive, physical ?

NHL Ice No Place For Politics

(Oct 10 2008 18:02 GMT)
from Larry Brooks of the NY Post, When Palin drops the puck, there inevitably will be photos taken of the Ranger and Flyer participating in the ceremonial draw. When circulated throughout the Internet, these photos are likely to imply endorsement. If the Governor of Alaska is presented with a Flyers? jersey?or appears wearing one?

Keep An Eye On Bouwmeester

(Oct 10 2008 17:53 GMT)
from Dave Hyde of the Sun-Sentinel, Watch Jay Bouwmeester. He?ll tell the whole story of this Panthers season. Everyone wonders if keeping a failed coach as general manager makes sense, if trading the top scorer was smart, if there?s finally a blueprint to the playoffs and not another skate through the wilderness.

(Oct 10 2008 17:36 GMT)
from Mike Boone at the Montreal Gazette, Gazette editor-in-chief Andrew Phillips did not write ?Internet Canadiens? on a napkin. But the creation of the Habs Inside/Out site parallels the Miami Vice saga in that a simple concept was developed into a project that has turned into a hit. Here?

(Oct 10 2008 17:02 GMT)

Warrener Goes On Long Term Injury Status

(Oct 09 2008 20:09 GMT)
via the Calgary Flames, Calgary Flames General Manager Darryl Sutter announced today that defenseman Rhett Warrener has been placed on Long Term Injury status. Warrener missed three games during the preseason due to an injury sustained on September 26th. This injury, combined with extensive damage from previous seasons, has made it impossible for Warrener to start the regular season. Long Term Injury status is available to players who will be unavailable for at least 10 NHL regular season games and 24 calendar days.

The Cost Of A Ticket

(Oct 09 2008 20:02 GMT)

Here are the average ticket prices, arranged from high-to-low continued and Vancouver leads the way with an average of $308 per ticket?

It Is A ?New? Season

(Oct 09 2008 19:06 GMT)
from Damien Cox at ESPN, The names aren?t necessarily tied directly together, which makes cause-and-effect difficult to prove. One hockey player makes it here, another is told he?s no longer wanted there, and the merry-go-round starts again. But two intriguing trends have surfaced this fall on the eve of the NHL season, one producing great optimism about the future of the league, the other a gloomy sigh of nostalgia for best days gone by.

Markov Asked To Shoot More

(Oct 09 2008 17:47 GMT)
from the Montreal Gazette, Andrei Markov loves the playmaker role but the veteran defenceman is being asked to shoot the puck more as he moves into a new role with the No. 1 power play in the National Hockey League. Markov moves from the left point to the right point and that?s where the Montreal Canadiens look for the shot. That?
