Oh Composting B&*^*&%^x

(Aug 12 2008 10:37 GMT)
I think I have to throw out several years worth of compost which I have collected in my garden. I think I better put it in the local council garden waste bins that I have - trusting that they can cope with it...You see I have bindweed - lots of bindweed. I had assumed that like most weeds a good compost heap would kill the plant once I pulled it up. http:

Writing Code, Writing English

(Aug 12 2008 05:57 GMT)
Have you programmers ever noticed that writing code affects the way you write English? I habitually write "cant" instead of "can't" because the extra apostrophe plays havoc with quoted strings - [EDIT which are often error or log messages]

Oooh, denim kilts

Recycling random plastics

(Aug 09 2008 10:05 GMT)
Can you recycle mixed plastics and epoxy resin? One of my bowling balls has developed a huge crack which almost splits it in half. I'm thinking I have to just chuck it in the bin. [EDIT: Google and the interweb tells me No , but reused.

Curved CCDs?

(Aug 08 2008 16:35 GMT)
I was discussing this sort of thing with ajshepherd a few days ago.... and suddenly, here it is. Digital Camera sensors which are curved like the retina of your eye... http://news.

Turnkey - Charing Cross Road

(Aug 05 2008 09:44 GMT)
Turnkey Music shop (and web retailer) went into administration in April this year. They stopped selling online but apparently kept their shop(s) open. I heard rumours that the one on Charing Cross road had a big sale on getting rid of the last of their stock. Can anyone confirm this?

Goth Clubs?

Keeping on track

(Jul 30 2008 20:23 GMT)
So I meant to tidy up the place - I started. I did a bit. And now I am watching Pulp Fiction. It is rather distracting. I had forgotten what a good movie it is.

USB Midi Keyboards or controllers

(Jul 28 2008 10:50 GMT)
Dear Lazy Web, I have been taking up electronic music as a hobby - some 20 odd years since I did any kind of music at school. I would like a Midi Controller for use with Linux based sequencers. It seems to me that although I could get a MIDI Keyboard or controller what I really want is a USB one. That also lets me use it with my Powerbook too.I'm probably going to use it with Ubuntu Studio (a low latency distribution of Debian Linux with lots of open source packages) Size is not terribly important - I'm mostly using it for composing and not performing.

More Cologne Photos

(Jul 27 2008 11:07 GMT)
I've uploaded a handful of other photos from Cologne at my web server in http://www. sflink. net/gallery2/v/AlexMc/Cologne/ separated out the Music Festival photos from the Cologne photos, because frankly, most of my festival photos are a blurred snap of some poorly lit band taken over the heads of a crowd.I also have a handful of 20 second videos of some of the bands I saw.

Linux Vector Graphics

(Jul 27 2008 11:04 GMT)
I am going to have another go at Vector Graphics software. I first used them something like 19 years ago on the Acorn Risk OS Platform - !Draw and !DrawPlus. The industry leader was Corel Draw.

Dear LazyWeb, Librarything vs Visual Bookshelf

(Jul 24 2008 00:43 GMT)
This is something I have been planning to implement for the last ten years, and never got around to doing it properly. Currently there seems to be two front runners for online cataloguing of one's own books: Librarything vs Visual Bookshelf. Can I have your verdict on why you chose one over the other? Thanks

Do Writers Read?

(Jul 21 2008 15:21 GMT)
I have a question which has interested me for some time. Do Writers read as much as Fans?It seems to me that once you've set yourself the task to be a writer, the time you spend writing is time away from reading. Do these people take time from elsewhere, or do they read less than your average fan? (I'm still expecting the average writer to be reading a lot more than the average person)(Obviously this is totally unscientific - it is mostly here as a hook so that you can tell me your opinion on the subject - if you've considered it at all)

Photos of my weekend

(Jul 21 2008 12:25 GMT)
http://sflink. net/gallery2/v/Amphi2008/Misc/ is a heavily cut down selection of photos from my second weekend at the annual Amphi Goth/Industrial music festival. You can find a handful of other photos taken by other people herehttp://flickr.

Humour via FastFwd

(Jul 21 2008 10:59 GMT)
This tickled me because I have been taking photos all weekend and wondering about the best way of doing it. http://pics. livejournal. com/fastfwd/pic/00017whq/

Two excellent things

(Jul 15 2008 16:05 GMT)
One of the two excellent things is a company, and the other a person. Firstly The AA is perhaps my favourite company of all time. They got a lot of stick for using the phrase "The Fourth Emergency Service" (and quite rightly so) but I agree with the sentiment. They are an important safety net which I wouldnt be without. Secondly alex_holden reassured me with just a few words.

Car Problem for chemists and physicists

(Jul 12 2008 20:08 GMT)
A few weeks ago we had quite hot weather. My car's spare petrol canister was not entirely full, and sometimes "balloons" out from the pressure of the petrol vapour inside. I think on this hot day the pressure of the vapour was enough to force it out of the canister and into my car. Needles to say I stopped driving around with the canister in the boot and left it by the front door of my house. Anyway, several weeks later my car is still smelling of petrol - and it is rather unpleasant.

Which Phone

(Jul 11 2008 08:19 GMT)
So on the way to work I saw that there were around 30 people queuing outside Liverpool Street Station trying to get an iPhone from the O2 store. I've had my TMobile phone for ages and I guess I could upgrade for free. But what to go for? Ideally I want something small enough to fit in a pocket, but powerful enough to use as an internet device. Should I forget about the two and just get a phone and a separate small notebook later on?

More on Tidying Up: Wooden Shelves and Paper

(Jul 10 2008 16:43 GMT)
So on Tuesday I solved my study shelving problems. I went to Homebase looking for shelves and discovered that they sell 2m pine floorboards in packs of 4 for under 40 pounds. These are quite neatly cut and fit the alcove with a couple of centimetres leeway. Unfortunately the other alcove seems to be three centimetres shorter - so if I use the same wood for both sides I am going to have to saw off a centimetre from the end... Bum.

Argh, Spam False Positive

(Jun 29 2008 08:40 GMT)
[ EDIT:; The explanation of this can e found here http://wiki. apache. org/spamassassin/AwlWrongWay ]I just got a false positive of some spam from my sister.

Recycling,

(Jun 26 2008 07:33 GMT)
Argh. I dont always take out my recycling until the day it is collected. I dont want people going through my waste paper (even though I have already shredded anything important). I also dont want it getting wet. So it is a bit of a pain when the recycling truck goes past before I've left the house.

Bowling at Rowan's, Finsbury Park

Mile High Lessons

(Jun 25 2008 21:43 GMT)
Mostly aimed at ajshepherd and drplokta.I have been given a present of a free flying lesson. How much preparation should I do? The card I have almost suggests that none at all is required. Any other advice?
