"I am the angel of death for her" (Sep 07 2008 07:28 GMT)
The Video Diary of Ricardo Lopez On January 14th, 1996, A 21-year old Floridian man named Ricardo Lopez began a video diary to record his own growing obsession with Bjork. Over the following nine months, Lopez amassed 18 hours of footage, documenting his own descent into madness, his decision to kill the singer, all amid the design, construction, and mailing of a sulfuric acid bomb. The diary ends as he rants, shaves his head, covers himself with paint, puts on a favourite Bjork song and commits suicide on camera. The footage allowed local police to alert Scotland Yard, and on September 17th, 1996 the gift-wrapped bomb was intercepted before it could be delivered.
The new Nazi army: How the U.S. military is allowing the far-right to join its ranks. (Sep 07 2008 07:11 GMT)
Nazis in the military is dedicated to the investigative project undertaken by journalist Matthew Kennard while studying for a MS in Investigative Journalism at Columbia University in New York. It was completed over six months and explores the increasingly liberal attitude of the U.S. military to neo-Nazis and white supremacists serving in the armed forces. via He also wrote about GOP teens at the convention, Chomsky approves.

Braunstein, the world's first role-playing game (Sep 07 2008 04:50 GMT)
Most gamers have never heard of Braunstein. Sad but true. In the hierarchy of self-awareness you?ll find the circle of gamers who know what D&D is (a very, very large circle), then inside of that is the circle of gamers who know what Greyhawk is (large but smaller), and inside that the circle who knows what Blackmoor is (smaller still). And then in the very center, vanishingly small, are the people who?

'There are two Americas - separate, unequal, and no longer even acknowledging each other except on the barest cultural terms. In the one nation, new millionaires are minted every day. In the other, human beings no longer necessary to our economy, to our society, are being devalued and destroyed' David Simon on The Escalating Breakdown Of Urban Society Across The US

The 20th Anniversary of Suffer (Sep 06 2008 16:09 GMT)
The Cornell Evolution Project, which polls prominent evolutionary scientists about their religious beliefs, is part of a PhD thesis by evolutionary paleontologist and UCLA lecturer Greg Graffin. Mr. Graffin is also the lead singer of a band named Bad Religion, whose influential album Suffer turns 20 years old this week. Though Suffer never charted, it became wildly popular in Southern California and helped to define the late 80's/ early 90's west coast sound -- a sound which pervades the rock and/or roll scene even today. Via YouTube, here are some live performances from 1988 - 1991:
Exercise and the Placebo Effect (Aug 25 2008 17:48 GMT)
Cleaning hotel rooms is a strenuous business. However, when Alia Crum and Ellen Langer talked to 84 maids, most were under the impression that they did not get enough exercise. Furthermore, when they were measured for tests such as BMI and blood pressure, their results were typical of couch potatoes. The researchers let half the group in on the knowledge that they were getting more than enough of a daily workout and kept the rest in the dark. After a month results showed the former group were healthier on every single one of the objective health measurements tested - despite claiming to have been doing no more exercise or to have changed their diet.
Women and children, depending on credit rating (Aug 25 2008 17:29 GMT)
"Women and children, first," is a familiar cultural refrain, with its popular roots in the gallant sacrifice made by the male contingent aboard the doomed Titanic. Their sacrifice has inspired poetry, sculpture, male social clubs, and, of course, cinema. Yet, this sacrifice of near-mythic scale was in some respects a myth, with survival statistics skewing well in favor of men of higher social and economic class than children (and, to a lesser extent, women) of lower status.
Moving maps of American elections (Aug 25 2008 14:04 GMT)
'Cinematic maps' of American elections a project from the Digital Scholarship Lab at the University of Richmond Video overview and short article from the Chronicle of Higher Education ('Cinematic' apparently means squished into little Flash videos. Some of the maps don't really benefit from animation (and I can't get the Interactive Map to load), but the analysis section provides some good commentary and by golly there's a bunch of maps to look at. Too bad they don't yet have the maps for this year's election. Warning: video)

Teaching philosophy to high school students (Aug 25 2008 01:29 GMT)
A Sydney Morning Herald article about the teaching of philosophy in Australian high schools. Today, this article appeared in the Sydney Morning Herald. Finally I might be able to get a job with my philosophy major! Not surprisingly the Australian Philosophy Teachers Network website is down, most probably due to the media attention. Hopefully it will be back up soon. |
