During the annual meeting of the European Health Forum held in Gastein from 1 to 4 October 2008, health NGOs present were given the opportunity to meet with the European Commissioner, Androulla Vassiliou. EPHA working meetings EPHA met with the AGE platform on 4 September to discuss the event entitled 'Main-streaming Healthy Ageing.' This is to be held in the European parliament with Lambert Van Nistelrooij MEP and Claude Moraes MEP. Please contact the Secretariat for more details. On 5 September EPHA met with ASPHER in order to explore the engagement of NGOs and civil society in the annual ASPHER-EUPHA conferences. Talks are on-going.

European Commission Publishes: European Research on Environment and Health Funded by the Sixth Framework Programme

Rapid response to soaring food prices

RCP study: Re-validation of Health Professionals

New rules on pesticide residues to strengthen food safety in the European Union

On 1 September 2008 the European Commission took an important step in its efforts to ensure food safety in the European Union, as a regulation revising and simplifying the rules pertaining to pesticide residues entered into force. The new set of rules harmonise the Maximum Residue Levels (MRLs) across Member States, and will ensure food safety for all consumers and make trade and import easier. Brazil is lobbying for biofuels to be introduced into the EU market, despite the reluctance of the scientific community and some NGOs. The toxic weedkiller paraquat, produced by Swiss agrochemicals giant Syngenta, has been banned in the EU in 2007 for not meeting health standards. Commission proposes harmonisation measures on tobacco taxation.

Mr László Kovács, Commissioner for Taxation and Customs, set forward a Commission proposal aimed at increasing EU excise duties on tobacco on 16 July 2008. The proposal aims to cut down smuggling and eventually to reduce smoking incidence through harmonisation of minimum taxation across the EU, especially in new Member States.
