Haunted Spice Rack On eBay (Sep 04 2008 06:46 GMT)
File this under strange things on eBay; a spice rack and a poltergeist in a package deal. I purchased this spice rack at an old thrift shop a few months back and ever since paranormal and unexplainable things have been occuring… the sound of an elderly woman humming in the kitchen as if to entertain herself while baking, banging of pots and pans have also been heard. Spices…
Firebird Database Does BLOBs Better than the File System (Sep 02 2008 13:24 GMT)
Firebird is faster than filesystem for blob storage!: This is encouraging. Storing files as BLOBs would simplify many scenarios, especially in the content management world. What I believe is pretty interesting is how writing to a Firebird database (which stores small files saving disk space since it only uses one single file!) is actually faster than dumping the same content to disk!!
Technoviking (Sep 02 2008 13:17 GMT)
KNEECAM No.1 - the original Technoviking tape: I know this is old, but I still watch it every once in a while. For my money, it’s one of the oddest things on the Internet.
MaxMind's Geo-Location Service (Aug 29 2008 23:26 GMT)
Geolocation — the concept of figuring out where your user is from — is one of those things that always sounded simple, but that I had never actually done. The fact is, no client had ever asked me for it. Then, today, one did.
Trivia via Network Cable (Aug 29 2008 19:39 GMT)
Joe bought some (wildly over-priced) network cable from Best Buy, and it had this printed on the side, lengthwise: The length of this 14’ cable is roughly double the appropriate distance of the imaginary bubble of personal space one uses at the ATM. The Geek Squad phone number is included, in case this amazing fact has suddenly made you remember that your computer is horked. I assume other cables have other handy facts on them.

Painting the Mona Lisa, the Mythbusters way (Aug 29 2008 14:55 GMT)
Mythbusters draw a MONA LISA in 80 milliseconds ! at NVISION: Watch this video to the end — the last five seconds in slo-mo are worth the whole thing. The Mythbusters were presenting at some conference, and they built a massive parallel paintball gun, loaded with specific colors in specific barrels, then fired it at a canvas, The result is the Mona Lisa, fired from a shotgun.
Working By The Hour (Aug 29 2008 07:01 GMT)
Why we bill by the hour: Interesting page explaining why this particular development firm does not do fixed bid work, and only works by the hour. Good reasoning here. It’s been my experience previously working at Compaq and later starting up our own business six years ago that in a fixed bid situation, either the client gets taken to the cleaners or the developers do. With fixed bid, the requirements of a project have to be so locked down and fine grained that there is no flexibility.
Password (In)Security at Lloyds (Aug 28 2008 05:49 GMT)
Man’s ‘pants’ password is changed: While this is funny, the important takeaway is that Lloyds apparently stores customer passwords in clear text, which is scary.
Viruses in Orbit (Aug 27 2008 15:35 GMT)
Reports: Laptop infected with virus on space station: And this is why you don’t use Bonzi Buddy as your auto-pilot. A laptop on the International Space Station is infected with a virus, according to SpaceRef, a website that covers the space program.

Intel's Remote Wake (Aug 16 2008 08:05 GMT)
Intel PCs will take a wake-up call over the Net: I feel like boot and hibernation recovery times will have to come way down for this to work well. Intel is unveiling new technology that will let computers wake up from their power-saving sleep state when they receive a phone call over the Internet. The new component Intel is announcing Thursday will let computers automatically return to a normal, full-powered state when a call comes in. The computer can activate its microphone and loudspeaker to alert the user, then connect the call.
