Coleman Lead Grows Slightly in Minnesota Recount (Nov 24 2008 16:26 GMT)
The Minnesota recount continued over the weekend, with Coleman's lead increasing to 180 votes, according to the Star-Tribune tally. His lead had shrunk to about 120 votes a few days ago. However, this is not a good indication of where the recount stands right now though it is obviously better to have a bigger lead rather than a smaller one. There are 1982 challenged ballots, and no one has a good idea of how those votes might split, and there is no reason to assume that they will split more or less evenly between the candidates. In many if not most cases, these 1982 votes were counted one way or another by local officials.

McClintock Surges in CA-4 Count (Nov 24 2008 16:01 GMT)
California's glacial count of ballots picked up a bit on Friday, causing a surge in Club for Growth PAC-endorsed candidate Tom McClintock's lead to nearly 1,800 votes, "perhaps sealing victory," reported the Sacramento Bee newspaper Saturday. McClintock's campaign blog posted this on Saturday: More than 4/5 of the uncounted ballots in this race were announced today, boosting our lead to 1,793 votes, or 0.49 percent. There are less than 4,100 ballots yet to be counted ?
It's Time to Appoint Jeff Flake and Jim DeMint (Nov 24 2008 15:43 GMT)
Club President Pat Toomey has an op-ed in National Review arguing that GOP leaders in Congress need to appoint Rep. Jeff Flake to the Appropriations Committee and Sen. Jim DeMint to the Finance Committee. Uncle Ben had it right when he said, ?With great power comes great responsibility.?

It looks like Geithner's background, education, and previous experience suggests that he'll take a positive trade position with China. That's very good to hear.

How to Steal the Election in a Few Simple Steps (Oct 29 2008 22:48 GMT)
Interesting article by Ken Hassett of AEI on voter fraud that is waiting to happen. Here's one way: Whether ACORN plans to try to turn false registrations into votes is hard to know, of course. But sadly, there are a number of pretty simple steps one could take to steal an election, given current law. The most dangerous scams would begin with actions similar to ACORN's.
The Cuban Missile Crisis and the Stock Market (Oct 29 2008 20:06 GMT)
It was 46 years ago yesterday when the Cuban Missile Crisis ended. At the time, nuclear brinkmanship between the U.S. and the Soviet Union was so high that everyone thought we were going to bomb each other into oblivion (Remember Kevin Costner's line in Thirteen Days? "If the sun comes up tomorrow, it is only because of men of good will").
What is with the FEC anyway? (Oct 29 2008 19:04 GMT)
The FEC requires groups like the Club to report electioneering communications reports within 24 hours. In the weird parlance of election regulations, that means if you start an ad today, you have until 11:59 PM ET tomorrow to report it. Similar regulations apply to independent expenditures. But when the FEC gets the electioneering communications reports, they don't post them within 24 hours.
DCCC Shock and Awe (Oct 29 2008 17:25 GMT)
Campaign Finance Institute just started publishing a handy tracker to party independent expenditure spending and Swing State updates these numbers with spending identified by day. I added up the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) spending for Monday. They spent $14.9 million. $14,498,252.
Chris Matthews and His Flat Tax (Oct 29 2008 16:15 GMT)
During yesterday's Hardball, Chris Matthews turned the discussion to the flat tax for a bit, and essentially called it a radical idea. Huh? He should know better. He was born and raised in Pennsylvania, and even ran for Congress there. (He lost.
Presidential Race Tightens? (Oct 29 2008 15:42 GMT)
A new Rasmussen Reports poll shows a tighter presidential race, but it's not clear if this is statistical noise or a trend. Excerpts: The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Wednesday shows Barack Obama attracting 50% of the vote nationwide while John McCain earns 47%. This is the first time McCain has been within three points of Obama in more than a month. Among those who ?

The Behavioral Revolution (Oct 28 2008 23:03 GMT)
David Brooks had an interesting column in yesterday's NY Times that is worth a read. Some excerpts: So perhaps this will be the moment when we alter our view of decision-making. Perhaps this will be the moment when we shift our focus from step three, rational calculation, to step one, perception. Perceiving a situation seems, at first glimpse, like a remarkably simple operation. |
