What's in a name? Maybe the stability of the world's financial system [Alan Stevens]

(Oct 04 2008 09:01 GMT)
So the 700 billion dollar plan has been approved. Now we have to see if it will restore confidence to a fragile and jittery financial system. It was touch and go for a while, but I wonder if things would have gone a little more smoothly if some thought had been given to presentation and branding. As a former politician myself, I'm not sure if I could have put my hand up to vote for a "bail-out bill", whatever was in it. The Oxford English Dictionary (OED) defines bail-out as "an act of giving financial assistance to a failing business to save it from collapse" On the other hand, the OED definition of rescue is "an act of saving or being saved from imminent danger or distress" Maybe that's why both presidential candidates are now talking about the "rescue plan".

Collective pleasure - Part 1: what excites YOU? [Mehmet Yildiz]

(Oct 04 2008 08:50 GMT)
I am excited by so many things in life. Excitement has a number of meaning but here I am talking about "the feeling of lively and cheerful joy". Excitement increases when we are in a group. A group with like minded people, with those members who enjoy themselves in the context as a team; sharing, collaborating and caring.

Prince of Darkness Returns to Government [George Montgomery Business Growth]

(Oct 04 2008 08:29 GMT)
In a last gasp move to save himself, Gordon Brown, has invited his old foe, Peter Mandelson back into the heart of Government. We can now expect a heavy duty charm offensive to be deployed to buy off the media to cover up the mis-deeds that has lead to a well and truly credit-crunched United Kingdom. But surely the biggest criticism of this Labour Government is that they did nothing - nothing to avoid being totally dependent for tax revenues on a consumer-led boom, nothing to promote business enterprise, nothing to prevent short-term trading in the City undermining longer term business growth. Their only focus has been on spending, spending, spending and now there's nothing left. As the Government now, after eleven years in office sets up an Economic Development Council, it so clearly demonstrates that these politicians don't have any vision and only re-act when facing potential loss of office.

Tesco say the time is right to enter the mortgage market [Fraser(Dr Squash)Cox]

(Oct 04 2008 08:17 GMT)
Tesco is planning to enter the mortgage and current account market during the credit crunch (Motley Fool 3rd Oct 2008). The major supermarkets already provide loans, insurance and pension planning. The next progression seems logical to be current account and mortgages. Supermarkets already offer a wide range of products which includes clothes, electrical goods etc, which has meant that they have had an advantage over the smaller traders whose family businesses have provided a friendly personal service in many local villages and towns. Does this mean that the monopolies that the supermarkets have in the retail industry is going to spread into the current account and mortgage markets?

World Crashing Down [Lisa Molina]

(Oct 02 2008 07:51 GMT)
A few days ago JIm Ziegler started a blog conversation titled... "What If Your Whole World Came Crashing Down Today"? I commented today by Lisa Molina on 2-Oct-08 6:22am JIm - I got to the 2nd line of your post and I stopped reading. If I wanted doom and gloom I'd just look at a newspaper or turn on the news...

Light bulbs old and new [Tim "Italy" O'Donnell]

(Oct 02 2008 07:48 GMT)
Everyone keeps telling me that these new ecological light bulbs last 8 to 12 times longer than the old inefficient light bulbs. Being aware of the need to reduce energy consumption I am replacing my old bulbs with the new ones but I have had to change some of them after a year or two whereas many of my old bulbs have been happily burning away for donkey's years. So it seems to me that I am changing these new bulbs more often than I have ever changed the old bulbs. This suggests that they do not last any longer. Has anyone else had a similar experience?

Windows XP [Ida Horner]

(Oct 02 2008 07:22 GMT)
Do you use Windows XP? If so have experienced problems logging in? It takes me almost 10 minutes to get to my Desk top and I have lost Internet explorer, it doesn't pick up that I am connected to the Internet at all. I have lost access to MSN Messenger even when accessed through Firefox and can't take advantage of Windows upgrades? My IT guy thinks that XP has developed problems as he ahs found 3 other such cases.

Crikey: New networking challenge - Rating option: I don't like them at all . . .

(Oct 02 2008 07:21 GMT)
. . . No, not on ecademy, on yasni. And no, it's not new, it's been there since yasni went online. What will be new is when yasni will be available in English too and everyone can rate everyone they do not like for whatever reason with .

Fay's going on again [Tim "Italy" O'Donnell]

(Oct 02 2008 07:21 GMT)
Fay has been going on again in various blogs about some sort of ideal Utopia wherein people sort of grow their own produce, live off the land and barter goods and services between themselves. What a load of ecological rot, you may say! Well, I, for one, absolutely agree with her. Who has been/is being hurt hardest by the credit crunch? Those who have borrowed more than they can afford and those who are living beyond their means.

Rural Andalucia - An Occasional Series From My Gorgeous B&B ... [Amanda Hamilton]

(Oct 02 2008 07:15 GMT)
It's just one of those mornings this morning ... a bright, fresh blue sky with wisps of clouds still kissed a million colours by the rising sun that has just shown its face over the eastern olive laden hills ... I love this time of day - the birds singing, the sky peaceful, the temperatures on offer just perfect for all the activities that make you melt in July and August .... I've often wondered why so many people who don't have children come to Spain during July and August ... it's too hot, too crowded and too expensive by my reckoning ....

SAM goes Caribe [Job Holtrigter]

(Oct 02 2008 07:05 GMT)

I would really appreciate your help with this.... [Sofie "Catching dreams" Vanhoutte]

(Oct 02 2008 06:51 GMT)
Dear All, Can you please try to help me win this competition of Nivea, with your network, which might raise some money for my non-profit organisation Chalkline. As many of you will know, despite the fact I have a severe disability myself I live for my cause and want to brighten and enrich the lives of so many others with physical or financial disabilities. I need funds to be able to organize workshops and events for her target audience. The competition website is in dutch, but I'll guide you through it ... - Click on THIS LINK - Wait until the page is loaded and you see my picture - Click on STEM (Which is dutch for VOTE) - Enter your email address and the code from the security tag - Click again on STEM to register your vote.

Notes from the Duck Pond 25 - Thank you Jim Ziegler [Franck Peters]

(Oct 02 2008 06:24 GMT)
This is a picture of a building - of a museum in a town about 40km from where we live. It is a building which will be torn down soon and the property will be turned into a block of flats. The building may disappear, but what was inside does not and cannot. And this, for me, is symbolic for the "hick-up" that is distracting us at the moment. Here, my response to Jim Ziegler's blog entry from earlier today, which he kindly "message automated" to me as well.

Hysterical Sex in Hotel Joke .... Apologies if you've heard it before ... [Amanda Hamilton]

(Oct 02 2008 06:23 GMT)
A man checks into an hotel on a business trip and was a bit lonely. He thought, I'll call one of those girls you see advertised in phone booths when you're calling for a cab. He popped into a phone booth near the hotel and Found an ad for a girl calling herself Erogonique, a lovely girl, bending over in the photo. She had all the right curves in all the right places, beautiful long wavy hair, long graceful legs..... well, you get the picture!

Are We In A Recession and Headed Towards a Depression? [Naomi Trower]

(Oct 02 2008 05:53 GMT)
My family and I went to the Kidspace Children's Museum in Pasadena a few weeks ago. It was really a remarkable place. There was a photo that caught my attention and I just had to get a snapshot. How far will your money go these days? Whether we are in a recession or a depression this has been the topic of discussion amongst many of my friends as of late.

Do You Want A New Ecademy Features That Will Show People That Viewed Your Posted Blogs? [Gerard Espinas]

(Oct 01 2008 18:03 GMT)
One of the important features of Ecademy in which I am using most of the time is the Blog because it can showcase your expertise and position yourself as an Expert in your own domain knowledge. I noticed one shortcoming, in my own opinion, the existing blog features is to show only the total views but it never shows who are those people that viewed you posted blog. My suggestion is to have a new Ecademy features that will show people that viewed your posted blog. It is similar to the one that we have which is "My Profile Hits". I am suggesting to the Ecademy Management to have a new features called "My Blog Hits" The rationale behind this suggestion, namely:

(Oct 01 2008 17:39 GMT)
Why is it you get a penny for your thoughts, but have to put in your two cents worth?

PR Required for good cause. Any Ideas? [Peter Syme]

(Oct 01 2008 17:07 GMT)
On my list of the many things I am useless at PR comes pretty high. I will soon be looking after some 20 guys and girls who have lost their arms and legs serving their country trying to give them some confidence back. We will take them on a range of adventure activities Any ideas on how I can get some PR for BLESMA Hoping to get other businesses to do what I do, as these guys deserve it.

Is your Fireworks Night going to go with a BANG? [Bob Pilkington]

(Oct 01 2008 16:50 GMT)
Is your Fireworks Night going to go with a BANG? It's almost November and the fireworks season is nearly upon us. Many clubs and organisations will be opting to have a professional fireworks display company to fire the display for them in order to ensure that everything goes well. The fireworks will look great, all and sundry will have a good time, and by hiring a professional team to do the scary work, the organisers absolve themselves from any possible insurance claim, right? Wrong?

EFFECTIVE WRITING #4 [Phil Allcock]

(Oct 01 2008 16:42 GMT)
The 'write' results In my last blog, I suggested that before you start writing, you should think about your target audience. You should also think about what you want your written material to achieve. To get you started, here are three possible answers: • A greater customer awareness of your company •

Apocalypse now nothing to worry about, is it? [Steve · Holmes ·4 CVs]

(Oct 01 2008 15:56 GMT)
The quick-witted among you will already have remarked that I have been saying the capitalist system is built on sand for several years and hopefully this present crisis may now have fully opened your eyes to the other thing I have been saying, to whit: there is no such thing as an expert. Nobody has a clue what's going to happen next, let alone what is already happening, let alone what happened yesterday. And, in my long and varied life, I have only met two or three people who'd have had the guts to say anything or do anything even if they discovered a gigantic plot by mysterious evil forces.

Surviving the credit crunch using effective Marketing [Nicole Martin]

(Oct 01 2008 15:46 GMT)
Firstly, do not decrease your marketing budget or dismiss the need for marketing. If you don't continue implementing and updating your marketing plan, in a few months you could be asking yourself why is my business in decline? Generally the answer won't be due to the economic climate but because you have fewer customers or the customers you have are spending less. Maximise your marketing effectiveness to maximise your return on investment. Contact Nicole of Pinpoint Marketing for 10 top tips for small businesses to use for effective marketing!
