"We could lose, I suppose, if they cheat us out of it" and Other Tales of Republican Delusion (Oct 12 2008 14:31 GMT)
The black guy can't win. The black guy with the middle name "Hussein" can't win. The black guy with the middle name "Hussein" who has "most liberal voting record" in the Senate just can't win. So if and when the terrorist-loving, radical ideology-embracing, "he doesn't see America like you and I see America" skinny black guy from Chicago wins the presidency, the only logical explanation is that he stole it.
"Some nut" (Oct 12 2008 13:33 GMT)
We already know that anyone who thinks that Obama is a terrorist, or an Arab, or a manchurian candidate, or "dangerous", or any of that nonsense is a nut. Such beliefs aren't just rampant in the sewers of the Republican Party, but are voiced consistently in conservative blogs and "serious" publications. Like this crap, from the National Review: Did Obama Write "Dreams from My Father" ... Or Did Ayers?

LV=likely voter, RV=registered voter.
Your Abbreviated Pundit Round-up (Oct 12 2008 10:46 GMT)
Capitulation. NY Times: Again and again, party leaders said they were concerned that the race was slipping away and that Mr. McCain and his advisers seemed to be adrift in dealing with an extraordinarily challenging political battleground. Connecticut Post:
Sunday Talk - The Last Throes (Oct 12 2008 05:35 GMT)
The McSame campaign is scratching and flailing around like a cat in a swimming pool, desperate to claw out of the hole they put themselves in. My friends, it's time to toss them an anchor. Full lineup and other goodies below.
Open Thread and Diary Rescue (Oct 12 2008 04:45 GMT)
This evening's Rescue Rangers are Avila, ybruti, a synthetic cubist, HansScholl, ezdidit, and vcmvo2, with watercarrier4diogenes at the wheel of the Editmobile, the Robes of Objectivity flapping wildly behind him. You've read a common line here about a diarist listening to Limburgher or watching O'Loofah so you won't have to, right? Well, today a truly great Ranger crew has sifted and sorted through 655 diaries to bring you these 16 great examples of the excellent writing and breadth of subjects that Teh Orange has become known for. Please join me in giving them a big hand, and in celebrating a very important 20th anniversary: Tara the Antisocial Social Worker gives her perspective on how the world has changed since she first came out in National Coming Out Day:

VA-02: Drake (R) leads by 14 (Oct 12 2008 02:50 GMT)
Research 2000's poll for Daily Kos shows Republican incumbent Thelma Drake ahead of her Democratic challenger, Glenn Nye, by a healthy margin. Research 2000 for Daily Kos. 10/7-8. Likely voters. MoE 5% (No trend lines) Drake (R) 51 Nye (D) 37 Glenn Nye is a highly attractive candidate in many ways, but if this poll is to be believed, Drake has a comfortable lead in her bid for reelection this fall.
Hell to Pay: Seals v. Kirk Main Event (Oct 12 2008 02:28 GMT)
Update: Dan Seals has recorded a very special video, just for Daily Kos, and just for Hell to Pay: Let's give him some more extra special love tonight ... DONATE! Earlier tonight, SusanG kicked off the Hell to Pay fundraiser for Dan Seals:
WV-02: Capito (R) has solid lead, Obama trails by single digits (Oct 12 2008 01:45 GMT)
Incumbent Republican Shelley Moore Capito appears poised to win reelection in West Virginia's Second District, as she enjoys a solid lead over a viable Democratic challenger, Anne Barth. Research 2000 for Daily Kos. 10/7-8. Likely voters. MoE 5% (No trend lines) Capito (R) 53 Barth (D) 39 That's not exactly beautiful for Barth.
Great job, Philadelphia (Oct 12 2008 01:28 GMT)
The crowd gives her the appropriate welcome. And watch how this "hockey mom" drops the puck, as though it's dog poop. Some hockey mom...
Hell to Pay: Seals v. Kirk Main Event (Oct 12 2008 01:00 GMT)
There's hell to pay tonight, my friends. And this week it's personal. Yes, our Orange to Blue candidate Dan Seals, who's facing down incumbent Mark Kirk for a re-match in IL-10, is worthy in his own right of support, but this past week the Kirk campaign lost its mind and slurred us--US! Daily Kos!--in its attempts to smear Seals.
More on What Makes Troopergate So Dangerous (Oct 11 2008 23:05 GMT)
A month ago, we were asking What Makes Troopergate So Dangerous and noting that there was a pronounced half-assed Cheneyist quality to Sarah Palin's approach to "governance." The release of the Branchflower report on Troopergate lays it all bare, and Palin's response to it makes the case against electing her: "If you read the report, you will see that there was nothing unlawful or unethical about replacing a cabinet member," Palin said as boarded her campaign bus in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. "You got to read the report." But as the very next sentence of the CNN report cited above says:
Trendlines (Oct 11 2008 22:15 GMT)
The Pollster.com composite now has Obama above 50 percent for the first time. And looking at the individual polls, one can get a better sense of just how difficult it would be for McCain to surpass Obama. First of all, there are just four polls all year that have shown McCain over 50%, all of them outliers: Gallup, 1/10-13:
MO-09: O2B candidate Judy Baker leading (Oct 11 2008 21:35 GMT)
Orange to Blue candidate Judy Baker's focus on affordable health care, renewable energy and getting our tanking economy working again appears to be resonating in her conservative district. So, too, are the latest series of DCCC ads, which eviscerate Republican Blaine Luetkemeyer for supporting the privatization of Social Security (a brilliant idea, I must say, especially as Wall Street collapses around us). And it probably has not helped Luetkemeyer that one of his key cronies - the man who drafted his speech announcing his campaign and outlining his platform - has been indicted for distributing pornography to minors. The latest poll for the DCCC in Missouri's Ninth District shows the progressive Democrat leading her Republican opponent by four points: Global Strategy Group for the DCCC.
How Mavericks Talk (Oct 11 2008 21:00 GMT)
Less than a day after a report revealed that Sarah Palin abused her power as governor in the pursuit of a personal vendetta, John McCain and Palin hit the campaign trail: MCCAIN: As a senator I’ve seen the corrupt ways of Washington and the wasteful spending and abuses of power ...
Midday Open Thread (Oct 11 2008 20:30 GMT)
Sarah Palin is hoping to show America that she has a sense of humor by appearing on Saturday Night Live on October 25th. If nothing else comes from her disaster of a campaign, she certainly has made SNL "must watch TV" again. While most people in America were losing truckloads of money this past month, including 17 billionaires who lost more than $1 billion each......Warren Buffet hauled in $8 billion, once again making him the wealthiest person in America. Think Progress notes that President Bush seems to be relieved that his reign is almost over.
AZ-03: Within striking range (Oct 11 2008 19:55 GMT)
Research 2000 for Daily Kos. 10/6-8. Likely voters. MoE 5% (No trend lines) Shadegg (R) 48 Lord (D) 39 Anzalone Liszt Research (D) for the DCCC. 10/6-8.
100 Percent Negative (Oct 11 2008 19:15 GMT)
Together, Barack Obama and John McCain spent $28 million on television advertising last week alone. So if seems that every other commercial is a political commercial, you're not far off the mark. Obama outspent his Senate colleague by nearly $6 million, but there was another difference between the two campaigns. Here's a striking finding: the analysis shows that in the past week, nearly 100% of the McCain campaign ads were negative, compared with about a third of the Obama ads.

CA-04: McClintock was endorsed by KKK in 2003 (Oct 11 2008 17:50 GMT)
When you stage as many failed runs for public office as Conservative Icon Tom McClintock has done, it can be awfully hard to keep straight the lists of who endorsed you, when, for what. Seems that the Icon has a particularly bad one on his resume, however; in 2003, when running for Governor of California in the recall election to succeed Democratic Governor Gray Davis, McClintock "won" the endorsement of the Imperial Knights of America. David Dayen at Calitics has the story: It turns out that in 2003, when McClintock was running for his eleventy-teenth political office in the California governor recall election, he was endorsed by none other than the KKK.
GA-Sen: "Bomb Obama" (Oct 11 2008 17:00 GMT)
The McCain/Palin Hate Machine hits Georgia. The fury and loathing of Obama being whipped up largely by McCain-Palin-GOP rhetoric about the Illinois Senator is now spilling into down-ticket races, specifically the battle between GOP incumbent Saxby Chambliss and his Dem challenger: Thursday's debate took place in front of a highly partisan crowd in the GOP stronghold of Middle Georgia. Chambliss supporters waved "Saxby" signs and offered up a sustained "boos" when Martin mentioned Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama. "Bomb Obama," one woman hollered.
This Week In Conservatism (Oct 11 2008 16:00 GMT)
It's chilling to contemplate just how many more weeks like this one the country can take. Bad week, real bad; ugly start to nasty finish. What sucks even more is the entire nation is gripped ever more tightly in an eternal conservative nightmare from which it cannot yet wake. This Week in Conservatism we learned that even as Lady Liberty stumbles and falls to her knees, crying out for a candidate that will unite us in purpose and lead us to solutions, the Plain-McSame campaign somehow concluded that what the Homeland really, actually, desperately needs is more hatred, ignorance, and division amongst ourselves. |
