Freer Gallery of Art Originally uploaded by ultra-K One of the things I love most about living in DC is the film festivals. If you’re in the mood for a little Chinese before the Olympics kick off, head over to the 13th Annual Made in Hong Kong Film Festival at the Freer Gallery. Tonight’s film, [...

Eastern HS Marching Band Needs YOU! (Jul 29 2008 13:17 GMT)
The Eastern High School marching band has been invited to perform at the Pro Football Hall of Fame festivities next week. Problem is, they’re having trouble raising funds for the trip. According to a great piece over at City Desk, the band was counting on checks from summer jobs to pay for their bus tickets [...]
Screen on the Green: Arsenic and Old Lace (Jul 28 2008 16:24 GMT)
Though Amy covered most of the city’s summer films a couple weeks ago, I want to shine a special spotlight on DC’s Screen on the Green. I’ve been a big fan of this outdoor film festival since its debut nine years ago.
Introducing The Hub (Jul 28 2008 06:42 GMT)
If Metblogs is a city, hub.metblogs is the playground. We kept hearing from people that one of their favorite parts of Metblogs was meeting and interacting with readers and writers from other parts of the world, as well as getting requests for more ways that readers could be involved besides just posting comments. We thought [...]
Buy it Fresh (Jul 25 2008 19:01 GMT)
baby tomatoes @ dupont farmer’s market Originally uploaded by gingher Discouraged by the slim pickings at your local Safeway and Giant? Worried about FDA warnings about Salmonella contamination of fruits and vegetables? Don’t want to spend more than $1 per orange at Whole Foods?
DC Restaurant Week: August 11 - 17 (Jul 23 2008 16:00 GMT)
OpenTable just announced the participants for one of my favorite semiannual events - DC’s Restaurant Week. Some of the city’s finest restaurants offer fixed price, three course meals for lunch and dinner. DC Restaurant Week:
Heavy Metal: Renaissance Warfare at the Folger Shakespeare Library (Jul 22 2008 16:25 GMT)
Warfare today mirrors its state during Shakespeare’s time. Science delivered a period of transformation. As technology improved with the introduction of gun powder and the musket, the role of the armored knight and his physical strength lost its military usefulness. Most of the custom made armor reflect the look of contemporary fashion.
Eating Out: The Good Stuff Eatery (Jul 22 2008 14:44 GMT)
An occasional series where my friends and I go out to eat. And then tell you about it. At the urging of a friend from school, we ventured to Top Chef contestant Spike Mendelsohn’s new restaurant on Capitol Hill: The Good Stuff Eatery on Friday night.
"I am the Bat-Man" (Jul 22 2008 00:09 GMT)
Yesterday, when leaving the noontime showing of The Dark Knight at the Uptown Theatre, a friend and I noticed the queue for the next showing. Eager Batman fans braved the muggy heat, winding all the way round the corner and up the hill on Newark Street NW. I was already nearly crippled by nostalgia; the [...]
Mysterious Crystal Skull Revealed (Jul 17 2008 15:27 GMT)
In 1992, a mysterious package was delivered to the National Museum of Natural History containing an unsigned letter and an enormous, milky crystal skull. On display for the first time, the 31 pound Smithsonian skull dwarfs the crystal skulls on view at the British Museum in London and the Musee du Quai Branly in Paris. Is this [...]
Summer films! (Jul 15 2008 13:15 GMT)
DCist reminds me that Screen on the Green has begun! Yesterday kicked off the 2008 run with the first Bond film, Dr. No. Sadly, I missed the opportunity to follow Bond to the Caribbean and beyond, because I was sick as a dog yesterday. By the time the show started, I was in bed.
Local coffeehouses winning the java wars (Jul 14 2008 17:26 GMT)
Despite the sluggish economy (and the recently-announced store closings from Starbucks), I opened my Post today to discover that local coffee shops don’t seem to be affected by whatever’s ailing the corporate behemoth. Post reporter Michael Rosenwald even writes that Arlington’s Java Shack seems to be flourishing:
Alexandria doesn?t "heart" Norfolk Southern (Jul 14 2008 14:30 GMT)
If you, like me, are a resident of the City of Alexandria City, you may have noticed a terse letter from Mayor Euille in the Alexandria news bulletin that arrived in your mailbox last week. The Norfolk Southern Railroad has established an ethanol transloading facility at its yard in the West End neighborhood. Now, apparently [...]
160-race losing streak. (Jul 14 2008 13:32 GMT)
Friday on ESPN’s FirsTake, there was an amusingly in-depth interview with team president Stan Kasten and President Teddy Roosevelt, trying to get to the bottom of why, in fact, Teddy has never won the Presidents Race at Nationals Park. In watching the video, it became apparent that some sort of a fix is in, despite [...]
Free Slurpee Day 7/11 (Jul 11 2008 15:00 GMT)

What a first day for biking! (Jul 09 2008 23:19 GMT)
Yesterday I rolled out my new electric bike for a new regimen of (fair-weather) bike commuting, and thoroughly enjoyed it. But, what a day to choose. It turned out that a young cyclist was struck and killed by a garbage truck in a tragic, but textbook, “right-hook” collision.
We Love DC (Jul 05 2008 06:18 GMT)
Dearest Residents of Washington DC, Hey there. What’s up? I’m Sean.
Goodbye, All. (Jul 04 2008 20:09 GMT)
My time with Metblogs has been far shorter and less-prolific than most of the great people on the team. Still, I have enjoyed having this opportunity to talk to you and write about this lovely place. In keeping with my minimal presence on the site, my sign-off here will be brief. I wish all our [...]
Thank You Metblogs (Jul 04 2008 18:49 GMT)
Three years ago, I found Metblogs and it was a great home for me. I had so much to say, so much sass to get out, and this haphazard family gave me the opportunity to express myself in 1,187 posts and too many comments to count. In that verbosity, I honed my blogging craft. [...]
Mysterious Package @ 18th and Pennsylvania Ave. (Jul 02 2008 17:54 GMT)
Street traffic is cordoned off and pedestrians are being kept away. The World Bank and surrounding facilities have instituted a “shelter in place” policy. It seems to be centered around the Edward R.
WaPo confuses news, editorial pages. (Jul 02 2008 16:21 GMT)
When my parents were here in March we happened to head a little farther west than we normally do, and ended up having a late lunch in Manassas. When we parked there it was hard not to notice the particularly large sign across the street and wonder what its story was. It was notable enough [...]
Rubber Duckie, You?re The One? (Jul 02 2008 13:56 GMT)
Apart from seeing a businessman borrowing his daughter’s Winnie the Pooh backpack today on the Metro, I’m not sure how many of us could publicly regress back into childhood at a moments notice. So it did warm my heart this morning when my inner child was revealed to me in a sign for the ?Jim [...
What could be more patriotic? (Jun 30 2008 14:37 GMT)
In preparation for Friday’s Fourth of July celebrations, I give you: the All American Porta-pot. For the first time in my adult lifetime, I am really proud to go pee. DSC_9739, courtesy of Me
Well, that didn?t take long? (Jun 27 2008 19:00 GMT)
Remember my analysis and prediction, yesterday? Which made me feel kinda dumb, since I said I figured we’d see some licensing movement in two months, but then Fenty made statements about 21 days. I wasn’t quite as wrong as I thought - the 21 days aren’ |
