'Liar's Poker' Author Sees Upside To Market Crash

(Nov 25 2008 20:20 GMT)
When Michael Lewis looks back on the Wall Street he wrote about in his 1989 best-seller, Liar's Poker, the street looks positively quaint. At the time, it was shocking that an investment bank CEO made $3 million a year. His newest book, Panic: The Story of Modern Financial Insanity is a collection of essays and articles written during the past two decades. As Lewis tells NPR's Renee Montagne, it begins with the crash of October 1987.

San Jose library use rises with sinking economy as free services draw families, job seekers

(Nov 25 2008 18:18 GMT)
A sagging economy has helped renew interest in San Jose libraries in recent months, and more families and job seekers are coming in to check out free services and materials. San Jose Library Director Jane Light said at a recent city meeting that library visitors increased 5 percent in July compared with July 2007, and librarians received 14 percent more requests for help in its latest yearly figures. Light indicated that technological improvements and a few new branches have helped pick up visits, but San Jose's system is also part of a recent national surge in library use that is typical during recessions. Reading Can Be a Hair-Raising Experience

(Nov 25 2008 14:02 GMT)
Mint Canyon (Santa Clarita, CA) Elementary School Principal Betsy Letzo has come up with some pretty wild ideas. But none have been as hair-raising as her latest reading-enhancement scheme, according to The Signal. These were the conditions: If students could read and pass comprehension tests on more books that their teachers, the teachers had to sport a Mohawk for a day. Participating faculty lost the heated competition and walked around campus Monday with their hair sprayed into long, stiff, colorful Mohawks.

Does the Web help or hamper research?

(Nov 25 2008 11:42 GMT)
Does the Web make it easier to do quality research? Or does it increase the likelihood that good ideas may be ignored and lost? This article offers an overview of opinions on the issue. Some databases present search results ranked by popularity or by date, with articles that have been read the most, or most recently published, at the top of the list. Some scholars feel that there are benefits to this sort of sharing of common knowledge and reference points, that convergence facilitates communication and progress.

"Perfect Weeding Music"--a CD Swap for Library Folk

(Nov 25 2008 11:41 GMT)
Your CD mixing skills wanted! Twitter user surferrosa (Nanette Donohue) thought that "Perfect Weeding Music" would make a great theme for a mix CD, and the Perfect Weeding Music CD Swap was born. Nanette writes, "The deal: Create a mix CD featuring songs that you would consider 'perfect weeding music.

Nashville Public Library might be absorbing the Public School Libraries.

(Nov 25 2008 11:39 GMT)
It all started last Thursday with a press conference by Nashville Mayor announcing his intention to merge the public library and the public school libraries. Then the School Board claimed they were unaware of his intentions until he held his press conference. There's a turf war brewing between the schools and the Mayor's office. Not sure anyone knows what is actually going on but there have been some interesting articles popping up. From American Libraries, From LJ, From the Tennessean.

When cleaning out the attic of the Guilford H. Hathaway (MA) Library, Michael McCue and others found more than just some musty items and cobwebs. Instead, they found historical treasures from the 19th century to the mid-20th century that they now plan to preserve at the Historical Society Museum on Slab Bridge Road. Among the artifacts were pencil sketches of two town officials, Guilford Hathaway and George W. Hall;

From Department Store to Library in West Texas

(Nov 24 2008 18:27 GMT)
Things are a-changing in San Angelo. Workers last week toppled the brick walls on the first floor of the Hemphill Wells Building, opening the interior to the elements and giving a glimpse into what the new library will look like when completed more than a year from now. "It's quite different to look at," said Library Director Larry Justiss. "That came down fast. There was just a skin left after the asbestos people got through.

Writing On The Walls Of The Nation's Library

(Nov 23 2008 22:30 GMT)
The Library of Congress may hold the nation's collection of books, but those aren't the only words in the building worth a visit. The white marble building is a cathedral to the written word. Lofty inscriptions peer out from among the stone columns, murals of classical figures and twining vines that decorate the Great Hall. "Words are also actions, and actions a kind of words," one reads. "In books lies the soul of the whole past time," another says.
