San Diego-based DriveCam, which develops driver safety systems, said Thursday that it has named Brandon Nixon as the firm's CEO and added him to the firm's board of directors. Nixon was most recently SVP at ViaSat, and has also served at Enerdyne Technologies, Boatracs, Hewlett-Packard, Texas Instruments, PCSI/Cirrus Logic, and SAIC. Nixon has also served as a genreal partner with private equity firm Housatonic Partners.... (more)

San Diego-based MP3tunes, the online music storage startup run by MP3.com founder Michael Robertson, said Thursday that the firm has linked its service with Logitech. According to MP3tunes, its Music Locker service is now available with Logitech's new Squeezebox Boom network music player. The music player will be able to connect with the firm's online music storage service. MP3tunes offers an online storage service which allows users to store and listen to their Mp3 music files.

Los Angeles-based HotStartupJobs.com, a new web site focused on aggregating job board listings, said Wednesday evening that it has launched its service, focused on finding startup related jobs. The firm's web site features listings from Dice, TechIt, Monster, Jobster, and other job boards. The firm said it is focused on filtering startup related jobs into a single, easy-to-use, and searchable site. The company was founded by John Diep, and is hosted by MediaTemple.
Docstoc Launches Synchronization, Personal Doc Storage (Sep 04 2008 20:59 GMT)
Beverly Hills-based Docstoc, a venture backed startup which runs an online document sharing web site, said today that the firm has launched two new features. Docstoc said that it has added a new feature, Docstoc MyDocs, which allows users to store personal documents online. In addition, the firm said it has created a new, download application that will automatically synchronize documents from a user's computer to the site.... (more)

Van Nuys-based Microfabrica, which micro-fabricates three dimensional micro-devices, said Thursday that the firm has raised $22.5M in a Series B funding. The round was co-led by Versant Ventures and Interwest Partners, and also included prior investors Draper Fisher Jurvetson, DynaFund Ventures, Chevron Technology Ventures, and Partech International. The firm said the funding will go to expand its products and capabilities in the minimally invasive medical device area.... (more)

Irvine-based Quantum Fuel Systems Technologies, which develops powertrain and other energy-related technology, said Thursday that it has consolidated its two California operational facilities into a Lake Forest campus. The firm--which is behind the hybrid powertrain being used in plug-in hybrid car maker Fisker Automotive--said the new location gives it approximately 100,000 square feet, for its product development, engineering, advanced research, and other facilities.... Fonality Dials Up $12M (Sep 04 2008 12:55 GMT)
Los Angeles-based Fonality, which develops open source PBX software and communications systems, said late Wednesday evening that it has raised $12M in a financing round. The round was led by Draper Fisher Jurvetson Growth Fund, and also included prior investor Intel Capital. Fonality said it will use the new capital to expand its market share. Randy Glein of DFJ Growth Fund has joined the firm's board of directors along with the funding.... (more)
Qualcomm Names New Enterprise Exec (Sep 04 2008 12:00 GMT)
San Diego-based Qualcomm has hired on a new executive for the firm's Qualcomm Enterprise Services division, the company said Tuesday. Qualcomm said that it has appointed Robert Walton as Senior Vice President and Division President of the unit. Walton has been at Qualcomm since May of 2007, and has also previously served at Compaq Computer, PIXAR Animation Studios, NeXT Computer and Northern Telecom Electronics (now Nortel Networks), among others.... Carlsbad-based Aptera, the electric car startup funded by Idealab and Google, said today that it has hired on a new President and CEO, Paul Wilbur. According to Aptera, Wilbur joins the firm from American Specialty Cars, a supplier of open air and convertible roof systems. He's also served at Saleen, Ford, and Chrysler.... (more)

Los Angeles-based tinyComb, a new startup focused on condensing and delivering summarized versions of popular blog sites, said today that the firm has launched a new web site, tinyMash.com. The startup--headed by Mathew Glueckert and Jason Wilk--said that the new web site will deliver condensed news from popular Web 2.0 blog Mashable.com, along with other sites.

Los Angeles-based Aqua Connect, a developer of Mac terminal emulation software, said Wednesday that it has named Digital Insight founder Paul Fiore to its board of directors. Fiore co-founded and served as President and CEO of Digital Insight, and took the company public in a 1999 IPO. Santa Monica-based Zag, which develops software to power online car buying services, has signed on the National Rifle Association as a customer, the firm announced today. Zag did not disclose the financial impact of the deal, but said that the NRA will use the firm for a new online car-buying program for its members. Zag's software provides a full, online automotive configuration which delivers full pricing on autos--including all optional accessories and options.... (more)

Monterey Park-based Kotura, which develops optoelectronic components, said this morning that it has inked a five year, $14M development contract with Sun Microsystems, as part of a DARPA contract. According to Kotura, the deal is part of a DARPA program, focused on supercomputing, the DARPA Ultraperformance Nanophotonic Intrachip Communications (UNIC) program. According to Kotura, the firm's technology will be used as part of an on-chip network of low-cost, optical interconnects.... (more)

Pasadena-based Big Stage Entertainment said today that it has debuted a beta version of its web site. The startup has developed software which uses digital photos to create a life-like, 3D avatar. The firm's technology was developed at the University of Southern California. According to Big Stage, the firm will offer a free avatar creation service and online platform to create your own avatar, which can be exported in movie clips and still images.... (more)

Google's online free photo organization tool, Picasa Web Albums, was upgraded today, adding facial recognition capabilities acquired two years ago from Santa Monica-based firm Neven Vision. Google said Tuesday that the firm's Picasa Web Albums service, which is used by web users to store and share their photographs, will now allow users to tag faces in photos on the web site, and automatically finds and tags people it thinks it recognizes.... Los Angeles-based Real D, which provides 3D theater technologies used for projecting 3D movies, said today that the firm has inked a deal with the National Association of Theatre Owners. Financial details of the deal were not announced. According to RealD, it has inked a deal to provide its 3D capabilities to the Cinema Buying Group (CBG), a buying program for independent theaters administered by the National Association of Theatre Owners.... Beverly Hills-based Motek Information Systems, a developer of warehouse management systems, has been acquired by Phoenix-based AFS Technologies, AFS said today. Agoura Hills-based computer game maker THQ said today that the firm has expanded in China, with a new Shanghai-based office. According to THQ, its new office will be used to pursue new development opportunities and expand publishing partnerships in the Chinese market. Irvine-based Socialcast, a developer of corporate social networking software, said this morning that it has launched a new "micro-blogging" service targeted at corporate customers. According to the firm, the new software comes as part of its upgraded Socialcast 3.0 platform. San Diego-based semiconductor developer Staccato Communications has begun shipping the firm's second-generation chip line, its Ripcord2 ultra-wideband ICs, the firm announced today. Staccato said that its new, second generation chipset offers single-chip, all-CMOS WiMedia UWB and Wireless USB capability, built on 65nm CMOS. San Diego-based PowerGenix, a developer of nickel-zinc, rechargeable batteries, said this morning that the firm has scored a deal with PowerEagle, a manufacturer of electric bicycles. Financial impact of the deal was not disclosed. According to PowerGenix, PowerEagle, which is based in China, will use its products across its entire product line offered by its North American partner Veloteq. El Segundo-based Internet Brands has hired a new CFO, saying Friday that it has appointed Scott Friedman to the position, succeeding current CFO Alex Hansen. Irvine-based enterprise software firm Epicor said Friday that the firm has expanded its operations in the Asia Pacific region, and has opened up an office in Thailand. According to Epicor, the new Bankok office will serve its clients and resellers in the region. Epicor said it has over 30 clients in the area, including Energizer and the Grand Hyatt Hotel. Epicor develops manufacturing, planning, scheduling, and other ERP and related tools for enterprises. |
