"Windows could not update the computer's boot configuration..." (Oct 11 2008 07:16 GMT)
I am attempting to upgrade from Win XP Pro (SP3) to Vista Home Premium, and purchased the update from the Microsoft Store online and downloaded my three files. That is, I am not using the CD or DVD option for upgrade. The Windows Upgrade Advisor gives me the all-clear for upgrade. When I commence the upgrade process and get to the 'Installing Windows...' screen it successfully completes the "Copying Windows Files" task but then fails at 27% through the "Expanding Files" process.

Firefox Mobile to be tested first on Nokia N810 (Oct 11 2008 06:59 GMT)
Mozilla will have unveiled the alpha release of its mobile Firefox browser, codenamed Fennec, next week. However, the code will only be available for Nokia's N810 Internet Tablet initially. The alpha code is aimed at Mozilla community members, specifically to give the innovative touch user interface and the feature set a grueling workout, says Jay Sullivan, Mozilla vice president of mobile. A release for Windows mobile is in the works, to be released "in the next few months", according to Sullivan. One possible interim option is a version to run on Windows PCs, in effect acting as an emulator.
3G spectrum to be auctioned among global private players (Oct 11 2008 06:58 GMT)
The Union Minister for Telecommunication and Information Technology Andimuthu Raja today said that the government will invite global private telecom players to bid for 3G spectrum through the auction process -- the date for which has not been finalised yet. The minister addressing the media in Chennai at his maiden press conference since he took over as the telecom minister nine months ago, said that the auction process will be designed and conducted by UK based Rothschild group. According to Raja, the limited number of players in India has forced the government’s hand to look for more bidders across the world for the 3G spectrum. The allocation of spectrum for state owned BSNL and MTNL have already been completed and are expected to roll out their 3G services by December this year. 3G is the third generation mobile telephony standards and technology that succeeds the current 2.

"Date modified" of Favorite file changes when ONLY (!) loading the favorite? Suppress modification? (Oct 11 2008 06:51 GMT)
I have several Favorites created in IntExp 6. Recently I upgraded now to IntExp 7 Whenever I load now the (old) favorites the "Date last modified" as shown in the WinExplorer column changes (= is set to the current timestamp). Although the Favorite file itself is NOT altered. How can I avoid the change of the "Last modified date" when I just recall an Favorite? Is there somewhere in IE7 an option "Do not change Favorite file when loading Favorite"?

Any old alkaline batteries that have outlived their usefulness on your digital camera can be placed in the Energy Seed's base, and this will take the collective energy of all the other batteries in there to power an LED lamp at night. Amazon Lowers Costs for Its S3 Online Storage (Oct 11 2008 06:34 GMT)
Amazon Web Services announced Friday that it will be lowering prices for its Simple Storage Service, known as Amazon S3. Beginning Nov. 1, there will be new volume discounts, based on a tiered pricing structure that offers greater discounts as storage volume increases. Amazon said its service is presently storing "over 29 billion objects," which is an increase from 22 billion at the end of the second quarter. S3 has received, during its peak at the beginning of this month, more than 70,000 requests per second to store, download or remove one or more of those objects.
Volume control is way too course. (Oct 11 2008 06:32 GMT)
I have a USB Audio device plugged into my MCE 2005 computer. The MCE non-linear volume control characteristics make it impossible to set desired volume unless you use the mouse on the volume control slider applet. All other remote/local control volume up/down buttons and knobs are hopelessly lacking in fine control. Plugged the same USB Audio device in a Windows XP system, and the controls work perfectly. I'm looking for a way to restore the XP style linear volume control on the MCE system.
